I just found this website and thought I'd join. I live in Frederick and am an avid archery hunter and waterfowler. I took a black bear in Ontario Canada this August, it was my first bow kill/first bear. I am always appreciative of any information on public hunting areas (as of yet I don't have access to any private land but am working on that)>

Welcome to the site mdbowhunter! Glad to have you here. I bet that black bear hunt in Canada was awesome! I would love to make it out there sometime. Theres lots of public hunting land down here in Southern Maryland, also on the Eastern Shore. Check out the DNR link on the home page to get more info on some land.

Welcome to the site. I have been watching countless black bear hunts on outdoor channel. I want to go more and more. Would you say it was a experience you would recomend to other bowhunters? Buckmaster is right, the MD hunting and trapping guide has public land listed for each county. A road trip to another county is always an adventure.

I would recommend a bear hunt to any archer, it was truly a great experience, not just the hunt/kill but the people I met in camp. Bear populations in Ontario, New Brunswick, all over for that matter are on the rise. Ontario no longer has a spring bear hunt so that population has really increased. It was not uncommon to see a sow with 2-3 cubs. The outfitter I was with normally had 18-20 bear "in the bag" by the second week, my bear was number 40. One of his drop camps had 100% success, the other was about 90%. For the group that stayed in town (me) we had 8 of 11 hunters successful. If I get a chance to go again I think I will try New Brunswick.

Thanks for the info on the Bear Hunts. I have wanted to try it for some time. I am suprised at such high success rates. Did you hunt over bait?

Yes, all the hunts are over baits. The outfitter I was with, Bob Bearman (no kidding), Nippigon River Bear Hunt, has over 500 square miles of lease. Bears will roam anywhere from 5-10 miles a night so the baits aren't their primary food source. It's more like an attractant to bring them in to a stand and hold them there long enough to get a shot. I had two bears come into my bait within the first hour of the the first afternoon. I missed the first one (unbelievable at 15 yds) and the second did not provide a shot. They will come into the bait grab something and wander off, its never a guarantee. I didn't see a bear on that bait until 4 days later.

I have a feeling that the Buckwild crew will have to take on a bear hunt soon. Sounds like an adventure. How bad are the buggs?

Not that bad. Everyone I talked to before I left said "get a therma cell". I heard all kinds of horror stories, mostly from those who hunted Maine/New Brunswick. I didn't buy a therma cell and had no problems, a couple of mosquitoes here and there, thats it.

No therma-cell for me! I am not convinced that they don't scare deer, so I will not be using one. Just going to cover myself from head to toe - no exposed skin. Hopefully we will have some pics of a couple stags to put on here Sunday......................

I used to live in Utah and hunt around the Great Salt Lake, the mosquitoes there were so bad before the first cold snap that they literally drove me nuts. One thing about spring bear hunts, the bears usually have a lot of parasites after the hibrenation so the meat is often inediable. I brought back about 40 lbs of bear meat, it is delicious!!! I've made steaks, roasts and stew and have not been dissapointed. I'm am going out to a small piece of private land I have access to out near Boyds then scout the Frederick watershed later in the day.

Good question! The hides are much nicer and I guess population control.
I know the Ontario Spring hunt season was stopped about 4-5 years ago becuase of anti-hunters. One individual in particular with a lot of $$$ and influence in Toronto was able to shut it down. More reason for us in the lower 48 to be ever vigilante about our rights and never give the anti-hunters "ammunition" to take our rights away (hunt safe, hunt ethically).
