This board will contain weekly reports on deer activity all throughout Maryland. Please feel free to post your own deer activity report as well. As this thread builds-up it will become a very useful tool to help patern deer activity and time movement as well as Rut activity.

Hunted in the mornnig. Temp was around 73 f. There was a nice 5mph wind. Got out around 5:45am and set up near a housing development and saw my first deer at 8:10am. I saw a total of 3 doe. I seems that early season it is hard to cross paths with a nice size buck. As we soon roll into October some of these nice size bucks should start moving a little more and more, provided that the weather starts to get colder.

October is here...and things are starting to [glow=red,2,300]heat-up[/glow]. One of my most favorite months next to November....Most people wonder why we hunters love the cold crisp days of fall and not the summer or spring, theres just nothing better than to step out the front door on a cold November morning and see the heat from your breath.
The deer activity seems good so far this year. Team Buckwild has taken 5 does a 9pt buck and a 4pt Sika stag already. There have also been some nice bucks taken around the County including a NICE 20pt from Charles County.
Lets see how October rolls in. Start looking out for some early scrapes, even though most early scrapes are said to be made by young bucks you can still find a pattern on buck traveling through your area and the start of the pre-rut.

10-06-06 The weather was not very helpful today. The winds were blowing hard and it has rained all day. Went out at 3:45pm and an hour later wondered what i had been thinking. I did buy an port o roof which was a lifesaver. Set up on a cornpile and at 6:15 had two fawns run in and feed. Two does stayed back 50 yards or so. Fawns stayed 30 seconds and went with the other two. Then I got cold and sideways rain got me soaked. Cold front pushing through and even with strong wind advisories I saw some movement.

10-07-06 About fifty degrees out this morning and windy would be an understatement. Set up in a funnel between a housing dovelopment and a large pond. It was so overcast couldn't see my pin until 7:30 in the morning. The bad news is I didn't see any deer activity. The good news is I didn't get blown out of the tree.

Due to the weather Saturday morning turned out to be uneventful for me. The wind was just too much.
As I expected the evening hunt on the other hand was MUCH better. I knew that deer would be moving early because of all the bad weather we had so I got into the woods around 1:30pm. As I walked to my spot I saw a Doe and fawn sneaking by at 45yd, they never noticed me.
The deer were moving at around 3pm. I had a spike, 6pt, and 8pt walk under my stand between 3:00pm-4:00pm.
The 8pt was nice but still a little on the small side. I could tell he was still young (maybe 2yrs) so I let him pass by.

I saw 3 deer while braving the strong winds on Saturday morning. The deer all seemed to be very cautions, as their noses weren't as good a defense in the wind. Did get a doe though.

Was off yesterday and got a morning hunt in. The deer were moving EARLY. The MOON was at full blast and I didn't even need my flashlight on my way to the stand. Now that the Moon will be returning to NEW MOON state many have said that by the next full moon the rut should be under-way, so we are looking at the second week of November for peak rut.

10-10-06 Went out in the afternoon hunting hardwoods overlooking a twenty foot drop into thick swamp. It was at least 85 degrees out. Got in at three jumped 6 deer as soon as I got to my spot, ridge covered in mountain laurel. Decided to go to the bottom 100 yards further down, jumped another. Walked back up top looking for a good tree deciding on a tree out of haste. Spent a total of an hour and a half walking around and sweated out a gallon of sweat. Grunted afew times had four does come in and smell me at 40 yards. Then heard someone shoot at them the next property over. Decided to head down early jumped two more on the way out. Walked to a near by field and had two does(more like fawns) walk directly at me from 80 yards to about 50 then running away when they noticed I wasn't a bush. LOTS of activity, between three hunters, saw over 30 deer. Even if most of mine were seen running away. Pre rut upon us???

Went out today & wish it would have been turkey season!! Got into my stand about 30 minutes before shooting light & about an hour later had 3 longbeards drop down from their roosts - about 15 yards from the tree I had climbed up in that morning. After a better look, they were definately mature gobblers - their beards were almost dragging the ground. I didn't see the first deer (though I heard one grunt), but my buddy did see one doe.

Went out for about an hour & a half this evening & saw 6 deer. At least 3 of them were nice bucks with antlers past the ears, but I didn't get a great look as they were about 100 yards away. Saw all of these deer at about 3:15 & they were chasing the doe. Seems the deer are moving throughout the day now. Time to sit them out.

10-19-06 Went to a 100 acre field in point lookout for the first time this year. They just cut the corn a week ago and it was pretty warm out. I think somewhere in the mid seventies. I saw a pair of bald eagles and had a six foot black snake climb the pine tree five feet away and twenty feet high. Didn't see any deer, but heard a few shots in the distance. Acorns were falling like rain and I figure the deer stayed in the woods eating them until dark. That will be the last time I hunt a field edge until after the rut.

[shadow=red,left,300][glow=red,2,300]10/21/2006[/glow][/shadow]Opening/(only) Saturday of the open 3-day smoke-pole season.... From what I heard from fellow hunters, this was a shot in the air - either you had a great day, or you had one that was so-so (there are never bad days if you get to get out in the woods). Think there are even a couple of contestants for October's BUCK OF THE MONTH. Personally, I spent about 11 hours in the stand after the good ole' whitetail & never saw the first one. I did, however, have a hawk land on the front bar of my treestand, so I know that I must have been well camouflaged. I have had birds and squirrels quite close to me before, but never that close!! By the way, it scared the living xxxx out of me.

[glow=orange,2,300]10/21/06[/glow]Saturday wasn't bad! The morning hunt was nice but no deer. Got down around 10am and headed over to another property for the afternoon hunt. Was set in stand by 2am and saw the first deer around 5:30pm, it was a small doe followed by another doe. The larger of the two (100lbs) began to bleat a few times. COOL... but no buck came in. Also had 6 Turkey walk 10yd from me, two of which had beards dragging the ground....cant wait till spring....

Got out on Friday 10/20. Rainy but ok. Saw a 100lb plus doe with two fawns....... as I were driving out of the property saw them 70 yards from my stand and those two fawns..... weren't fawns.... That 100 lb doe was bigger than I thought and those other doe were about 80lbs!! Incredible! She was an old doe! Never got to see any bucks but I know they are there....guess they know when I am there too! That evening was very windy and I didn't see anything. Fell asleep in the rocking tree! Looking foward to hunting november 5th and 6th!
