Crappy weekend for hunting, heavy rain, then wind, then tide 2' deep in most of the woods, then more wind howling...hardly saw a deer and I don't blame them for not acting right. But...I'm hitting it everyday now until I leave on the 9th.

11/03/06 The rut is in full swing. Saw bucks chasing does for a straight hour. 300 yards away unfortunately. Nose to the ground back and forth. Doe would run by with one buck chasing her. Come back three minutes later with two on her tail. Five minutes later three in pursuit. While driving saw multiple bucks in the middle of fields in broad day light.

Leonardtown is in St. Mary's county, Southern MD. I'm 25 minutes from Point Lookout MD the most southern tip of the state. This rut I have already seen more action than previous years. In the last two days I've seen five bucks, all nose to the ground. My buddy shot one tonight. Was in the tree 5 minutes had a doe runnin with a buck on her tail. Nice 8 pointer at 15 yards ran 20 more and dropped. Even saw does in the Target parking lot last night!

After about 45min she got back up and walked off in the direction she had come from. Got down around 11:30am

Went out today, 11/10/06 and saw a couple of deer in the morning. One was a small buck - 6 points or so and about 12 inches wide. He was walking very quickly with his nose on the ground. Little does he know it isn't his time yet & the big boys better not find him with a hot doe! I also saw a doe & she was too walking quickly, but probably for different reasons. Unfortunatley, there was no monster trailing her. I also saw 2 turkeys with 6 inch or so beards, so all in all, it was a pretty good morning. Quite warm for the rut though!!

11-10-06 Saw a total of thirteen deer this afternoon. The first three was when I wasn't hunting. Went to the farm I hunted yesterday to set some traps for foxes. At 1:30pm, Into my fifth trap I took a break to use my cell phone for a minute. While crouched down I heard a frieght train coming thru the woods. A doe bolted across the logging road i was on, 15 yards from me. Followed by a four point. They were in a dead run and never slowed down. Three seconds later a HUGE buck who was trailing the others came within 15 yards of me. He saw me standing there and turned around and ran back into where he came from. Wide, wide, wide rack on him.
I then set up at a different location and at 4:40pm heard grunting. Few seconds later had three bucks running 7 does. The biggest buck was sixty yards away, watched chase one doe off and not come back. The rest of the group came within ten yards and the little spike chased each doe round and round. Very exciting hunt, even though a good buck never came back, a ton of rut action!!!

Slow moving 6pt in the morning, and nothing in the evening hunt. Temps where in the hight 70's. Maybe the deer just needed to take a little break?
I hope they pick back up by this weekend.

Hate to say it, but I think the rut may be tapering off. I did, however see a nice 5 point in the morning searching with his nose to the ground.

Andy Murphy shot a nice 6 pt stag on the eastern shore today, he said he watched white tail chase does and fight on his property, but under the cover of darkness. he thinks that the rut may be kicking off for white tail there because of all the action. he had at least 7 nice bucks on the feeder at one time and some squared off and fought while they watched. said it was awesome. but it was dark so no shots, he was after a Stag anyay and scored a big 6 this morning. pics should be coming.
