4 of us went this morning split up to try and cover more area non of us heard a single gobbler. My cousin saw a hen that was it. I did take my 8 year daughter for her first time, she didn't have a gun just came along. She had a ball even thought there was no activity. We will try again next week.

Try using no decoys at all. You could also try having your friend sit and call about 20 or 30 yards behind you. Good luck!!

Without being in the woods with you it is hard to say. From my experience, the smallest barriers can hold back a bird, small streams, fence lines, hedge rows, thick brush, etc.. At the same time, I’ve seen them fly over swamp and across ravines to get there quicker. You may try the same setup and kill him this weekend.
Best advice I can give from what I gather from your post, you need to be in the thicker brush looking out to the more open woods. It is always tempting to set up next to that big oak in the middle of the open woods but if the bird you are calling has to cross a thick piece of woods to get to your spot, he might stay put and gobble in his little safety zone. What we ask turkeys to do is not natural, the hen is supposed to the gobbler. Good luck and keep at em!

mudduck, nybuckstalker thanks for the advice I killed a bird in the exact spot where this took place on opening morning and you both brought up 2 things I didn't consider I was sitting against the brush he hung behind and I didn't use decoys. It was frustrating because I had someone with me who has never killed a turkey and had 2 watch this bird for a long time with no shot...

My friend and I went out This past saturday and set up on two right at day break. We tried to get him to come in for about an hour and a half with no luck. We Heard on to our left earlier and I knew where he was so I decided to go in that direction. We got to the spot that I wanted to make a call and when I did he went off! We set up and within 30 seconds he topped the hill, saw my friend move, and then fell to his shot. It was a great time but my friend owes me!! BIG TIME! Only have cell phone pics.

Tried to call a bird onto a piece of public land on the Shore on Saturday. From 8 am to 10 am he covered 200 of the 400 yards between us. Then he drifted off into the woods, never to be seen again. Mature bird, by himself. Didn't gobble at all, just strutting in the field and SLOWLY making his way toward me. I tried everything and the kitchen sink, but he was set on taking his sweet time and eventually got bored...

finally got my bird this morning all of my hunting buddies wanted to sleep in so i decided i was going to go myself. went to a property that was smoking hot with birds last week got there late around 7 am and sure enough as soon as i stepped out of the truck one gobbled. i have worked this particular birs three times already to no avail. he was gobbling at everything sometimes triple and quadrupal gobbling so i was able to get within 75 yards of him befor hitting the first call. as soon as i yelped he went of but then nothing no response for a good three minutes then another gobbled 100 yards away same story with this bird he will not come in wants you to come to him he has been around. so i went down into the bottom where all the birds where last week and sure enough i hit the call and one fired off. i set up the decoys and sat up againinst a big oak. after the third gobbled another one joined and i knew i had a double coming in now. there was 4 birds gobbling all around me. sure enough about 15 minutes into calling here came two long beards they saw the decoys and started to act alittle funny at 35 yards but that was close enough for the 870 sps-t i shot and went to colledct my tom he had a real nice beard alittle over 12 real good spurs and probably weighed 22 or 23 pounds he even had some white feather in his tail fan i have one mounted that has the white tail feathers and this is only the third bird i have ever seen that has had the white feathers in the tail. so needless to say all the sleepy heads from this morning want me to take then in the morning. hey frank i talked to your dad and he said you were maybe doing some mounts ide be interested in getting a decoy made if you want to expirement.
