I was going to shoot you a PM to delete post, but saw the above. I'm TRYING to put up my fur this year and ship to auction. Not near as many local buyers as there was in the late 70s and early 80s. Heck ,none around here that I know of.Mostly doing it for the enjoyment, and to thin the fox some. Greys are supposed to be about the only thing bringing much.

Dave I would like to hear the story of how you dispatched that one. Even when I shoot them with a 22 they still spray. The only effective way I have found is to use a body grip trap and snap their neck. Thats a nice looking skunk, will make a real pretty fur.

Nick I'm trying some new things these days. I always tried head shots with many still spraying even when brained. Now I've been shooting them behind the shoulder with a 22 CB cap. Most of them sort of slowly nod off to that eternal sleep. It's quiet enough that it doesn't really seem to startle them. This one never sprayed.
I try to read their body language. Had one spray when I was still 50' away last week! This one was so laid back I MAY have been able to release him. But wasn't about to try. I have released quite a few out of box traps w/out getting hit. I usually run my line in the dark. Most critters get more agitated once the sun is up. Sometimes they just stare at the flashlight beam.
I've been fooling with a 220 on a stick for coons, etc where/when I don't want to shoot even a quiet CB cap. Have a Conibear holder then just find a stick. Think I'd need a pretty long stick before I try it on a stinker!
Lots of guys are going to a syringe on a pole to euthanize skunks. Sort of a painting extension handle. Small gauge needle and you can ease it into the lungs and it's like turning off a switch. Only works on skunks though.
Had one old timer tell me that they couldn't spray if their back feet were off the ground. "Just pick 'em up by the tail!"
Of course he also recommended that I move in fast and break their back!

Take a syringe on piece of pvc, fill the syringe with acetone, Inject them behind the shoulders. Very quick & humane death and no spray!!

Hey davep, nice skunk by the way!! Has anybody trapped muskrat before?? Whats the deal with this? Iuse to live in Lexington Park in the early 90,s and lot of people use to trap muskrat. Do you eat them or just a trophy??Or do you sell the pelts?

davep,
Tonight i finally went through the first 2 pages of your thread, and some great pics of the animals. You are a trapping machine. Excellant work!! Do you sell the pelts and furs? I,m just curious , i never trapped before. I got some beavers that are desroying the woods behind my house, considering doing something about the problem. What do you suggest i do ? Trapp them??

Make sure you have a trapping permit.

Like harcore said, you need a furbearer permit as of last year (06) Can't legally shoot them, although that's often the easiest way. I have very limited experience with beaver trapping, but have a guy who wants me to try to remove a few that are making on mess on his place. Rats, a buddy was getting $2.50 each for meats or 3/$7. Fur price shot up last year, then crashed on them, when take was so high. It'll take a few years to recover.

Thought I'd end trapping season with a nice beaver pic (get your minds out of the gutter!) from last week. Getting everything cleaned up and put away till next fall.
