I am a die-hard bow hunter who is looking for a good starting point for the little deer. I have been successful elk hunting but wondering if I should look for the same type of sign? I have read that I may need a boat or a bike to hunt but don't know where to go. Any suggestions? Any help would be appreciated.

August 18th, Doug Wigfield is doing a seminar at the southern md hunting and outdoor expo on sika. I have yet to take one so I can't give many pointers. Asseteague island and blackwater (need permit for blackwater) are great public land spots. You will need a thermacell/bug suit/bug spray, high boots/hip waders, sika call?, and patience. Some past sika threads may be helpful as well.

Best thing you can do is come to the Expo on the 18th, listen to Doug's seminar and buy one of his calls. I have never had as much excitement in the woods as I have with Sika hunting on the Eastern shore. The way these little sucker can blow is amazing! You would swear you were hunting a 2000 pound elk. Now I'm all pumped up for sika hunting!
Blackwater is the place to go, but you have to mail in for a permit. Taylors Island is a public spot near Blackwater and no permit is required there. Assateague Island is also a favorite spot of mine.

I like Blackwater because I can drive back into the areas that I am hunting. I heard Taylor Island is mostly boat access is that true? I have never been to assateague Island, do you need any special permits because it is a beach area?

We have walked in to Taylors Island before and hunted but I'm sure all the "GOOD" spots or boat in. As far as Assateague you dont need any special permit, just a hunting license and to sign-in at the park rangers station. Make sure you sign back out or they will kick your butt ;D. If you don't sign out they have to go looking for you!

Some of Assateague National Seashore you should get the offroad permit if you have a 4x4 and drive down the beach, will get you away from the crowds. What's a kayak?

Back when the 'behind the dunes " road was open at Assateague, I'd thumb down the beach a couple miles at O dark-thirty, then hunt back, into the usually prevailing winds.
A guy I know has a 4X4 van,and carries his canoe down the beach.
Years ago, I saw a F250 4X4, with a 16' john boat up on the ladder racks, with a 20HP Merc in the bed!
They ran down then launched, to get to some of teh little islands.)BEWARE: Many are privately owned
