I hunt in Mardela Springs, MD... Heard some wacky noise in the woods ... like a whistling or bugling or something ... I think it may have been a sika deer. Does anyone have a sound recordings of a sika deer ... of know what they sound like? ... I’m really wondering if the property I hunt has sika deer on it (no one has taken nor seen one on the property)

I don't have any recorded, but the sound is similar to that of an elk. With it's location, it is very possible that there are sika deer on the property.

Yup, there are sika in Mardela Springs ... thanks for that link above .... I was mistaken the yak-yak-yak noise for a weird assed turkey ... definitly been hearing that yak-yak-yak too.

There is a guy who makes a sika call, I believe his name is Doug Whitfield. My dad bought the call for me and made a copy of the instructional cd. I will forward the contact information when I get it from pops, if your interested. The cd demonstrates all of the vocalizations of the sika.

Yes, there are sika that far over. A few have been seen by the bypass in Salisbury, too. Tagging studies a few years ago at Tudor had one that summered near Decoursey Bridge in Dorchester but in the fall would migrate all the way to Mardela for the winter. Seen a few myself down toward Quantico and below Hebron.
Be careful on that yak-yak noise, we've got several marsh birds that make a VERY similar noise, one of the rails I think. Hear it all the time in the marsh but rarely is it a sika.

Definitely Sika in Mardela Springs. Hunt near there and got a 7 pointer that booked out at 54 5/8 at the buck expo in Frederick this past August. It would have been a perfect 8 but the split tine on the left was busted off.

Wow that sounds like one great stag. Love to see some pictures if you get a chance to post em. Anyone know the top scoring sika stag measurements?

Yeah, it's an 8pt that scores 75" an some change. I think the guy that shot it owns Whitmarsh Arms or something.

I have that call from Doug and it is great. I used it this year down at Blackwater and had a bugle off with a sika stag out in the marsh. I am soooo hooked on sika hunting that I am taking a week off next year to go down there.
