Well, all I can tell you is that we did not come back with a sika deer, but we did come back with some great memories of an awesome sik hunt on the eastern shore. We woke at 2am and headed out to Cambridge from Waldorf. We had plenty of time to make the 2 mile hike back to our spots and be set up well before day break. The morning went by pretty slowly with no Bugles or sign of sikas. We met for lunch and a mid-day break around noon, then it was back to the swamps. The sika didn't start their bugling till just before night fall, but when they did it was awesome. Hardcore missed a hind just before dark, and I saw nothing all day but still had a great time in sika country.

Let me say it was a great day. Saw some monster squirels that I found out to be delmarva fox squirels(protected species) and hunted some challenging terrain. Set up hardwoods in the morning and had some turkeys around me. Thought it was a great spot but no action. Set up in some flooded timber in the afternoon, 200 yards from the river. Ten minutes before dark heard something splashing in the water. Two minutes later saw the rear of the sika heading away from me. I called to her which made a stag bugel. Buckmaster bugeled back at the stag. The hind(female sika) turned and came toward me heading toward buckmaster. At 30 yards in the middle of my draw she spotted me. Held the draw for a while, released, thought I heard a thud. She hopped(like a mule deer) then stopped. Waited for her to fall over but she hopped off into the thicket. I missed her. I was nervous, tired, anxious, and rushed. The first one I had seen from a tree. Relized the next day my I left my pendulem sight in the fixed position. Which is only acurate to 15 or so yards. And with a small target that was a recipe for a miss. Still had so much fun, but won't be tasting sika meat anytime soon. It will that much sweeter when I finally get one!!

Sounds like you guys at least had a fun hunt! Afternoons can be great, especially if you can hit 'em two or three afternoons in a row. Stags will normally bugle when they get up out of their beds in the afternoon, and they normally bed in the same spots unless disturbed. Hear one the first afternoon, then spend the next few afternoons working in close to his bedding area and be close enough to bugle at him when he stands up to start his roaming. Lotsa travel for you guys to do that, but it works!
