There is a swamp that is fairly open for ducks to fly into. A beaver has it backed up so there is good water!! I have not really looked for ducks but a friend said he saw some fly in there. Do you all think it would be a good place to hunt? Morning...evening?

Had a place like that years ago. Lot of wood ducks, early season. Only problem was, they'd drop in 5 minutes after hours and leave 5 minute before!

Thanks for the insight. This is only my second year and I did not kill one mallard last year. Did not even shoot at one. Just starting to learn the difference netween the ducks. Can tell you by looking at a pic but not when they are flying 50mph! I will try it in the am. Are geese and ducks similar as to where they go to and from during the day? From a river to the field in am and reverse in pm???

I have a place like that also, but like stated early the woodducks only fly right at first light and right before the sun goes down. There are still plenty of woodies around.

Saw no woodies or ducks or geese at my nanjemoy swamp spot. Tons of droppings from geese on logs and grass. I know they have been in there, just not today I guess. I went to chapel point Saturday evening and we did not get to shoot at anything, hunted goose in the morning and only got a group of 4 to give us a look. Where is there a good place to hunt ducks and geese from the shore? Is it just not worth hunting for them if you do not have a boat?

if you got farm fields within a couple of miles from water you can goose hunt there. good luck finding places, I started about 2 years ago, and have 2 spots... nether of them I can go to without other people. ducks you can call dnr before 11 and try to book a public blind at chicamuxen, you can walk to those from the woods, or you can hunt the flooded timber and big pond at myrtle grove. I havent done any of this yet, but thats the best of what Ive been told after asking and looking and learning for a few years. Im thinking of stopping by some farms in st. marys where I know geese fly and a few other areas and asking permission.

The farm I hunt is right off of route 5 beside Zekiah Swamp. My buddy has killed geese there this year but it seems that all the geese go to the pond just up the road in Zekiah Manor. Hunted his farm Tuesday and had only 4 geese give us a look. I drove up the road and there had to be over 400 geese in the back yard of a house near that pond. I think the guys wife feeds them! I have tried to get those blinds that you can reserve but most of them are boat access only and the ones you walk to are nearly impossible to get inless you are rich and do not work the weekdays. I have given up on bird hunting for this year! Too much work and not a lot of payoff in my opinion. Good luck to you all though!

Duck hunting is much like deer hunting, a little homework pays big dividends. You gotta scout, play the weather and use the right equipment. Hunt where the birds want to be. Myrtle grove has maps for plenty of places you can walk into and hunt. The best place can stink if the conditions aren't right. I don't mean to sound cheesy but don't give up. PM me and I can give you a few thoughts on where to walk in at and possibly get some birds ;D
