We cleared about an acre 8 or so years ago and have tried many different types of seed and methods of planting. The deer seem to like imperial whitetail clover best and it responds well to fertilizer and lime.We had an absolute monster in there 6 years ago but he proved too elusive. We have a timed hanging feeder and a ground unit (both corn)but the deer prefer clover .We put more time and money in our plot than we do our lawn. You have to have priorities. I would love to expand our setup and with some luck I will .

Planted 3 acres (strip along a field edge) this spring, planted a mixture of clovers, alfalfa (primary) and chicory. Looking for the protien. At first was concerned with the alfalfa growing in the soil typs and PH, but since planting in late March everything looks great. Pulled soil samples and already had a decent PH in most areas, but the areas I didn't we boosted it. Used a starter fertilizer at planting, and have since sprayed a herbicide to control the weeds. The plots look awesome. And I would say already a sucess, before planting plots it was typical to see an average herd size of about 5-10 deer in the same fields. Now since having attractive food plots we are seeing as many as 24 deer on a daily basis. Great for the hunter, but bad for the farmer. But luckly i'm the farmer.

To date, all management decisions come through daddyunlce on the barnes plantation. So unless you want to get cut out, you better behave.

Just wait until I talk to grandpappy about those deer eating his beans, I'll have him on my side and I KNOW who the real boss is. Hey, if I get the job down there who'd going to rent me a room, you or Uncledaddy???
