Charles County - On Thursday, April 26, NRP investigated a hunting accident that occurred at 6:30 a.m. on private property off of Mitchell Road. Daniel Albert Bushey, 64, of Indian Head allegedly shot Robert John Quinn Jr., 61, of Mechanicsville while the two were hunting turkey together on the Hanson Hill Farm. The two were twenty yards apart when Bushey mistook Quinn for a turkey. Quinn was struck in the shoulder and back area by pellets from Bushey’s shotgun. He was transported to Civista Hospital in La Plata and later transferred to Washington Hospital. Bushey was charged with negligent hunting.

YIKES - I still don't quite understand how a man looks like a turkey though.
I wonder if that's the Bushey that does taxidermy in Indian Head?

Or perhaps Quinn could not control himself and let out a big gobble.

It's a shame. Just another reminder that if you let up for a second, dangerous things can happen with this sport. Stay safe fellas. -- B

And with these guys ages I assume its not there first hunting season. At least nobldy was killed, manslaughter a lot worse than negligent hunting.

You guys are taking it a lot better than I did when I first read about it. Granted, I don't know the "full details" of how he got confused between a human and a turkey, but, ..........THAT IS ABSOLUTELY RIDICULOUS! He was only 20 yards away according to the report. At that distance you should be able to tell the difference between a human and a turkey. If you can't, you got problems. I'm gonna assume because of his age, he was grandfathered in as to not having to take a hunters safety course, but HE SHOULD! Stupid mistakes like that result in stiffer sanctions for all hunters. I'll end my rant now.......

I agree with you 100%. I guess as he might be a taxidermist and his livleyhood depends on hunters, I didn't want to slam him too hard. He probably still can't sleep at night knowing he almost killed a friend and his legal troubles are just begining. Hopefully a reminder for other hunters to take responsibility when hunting or trapping or fishing or in the outdoors in general.

I know this is a old thread but i had to comment. About ten years ago , my brother and i were turkey hunting on greenridge in washington county md. I didn,t roost any birds the night before , so i prayed a tom would gobble in the morning that we could set up on. That morning there was no hammering , so we tried walking and do some locating calls with some hen yelps. No luck, but i heard some noise behind me. I turned around slowly to see some jacka-- 40 yards behind me with his gun drawn in my direction. I hollered to him and he realized i didn,t have feathers, he apologized but that is how close i could of been shot. Not everyone is a safe hunter , so everyone please be safe in the woods this spring!!!

I was leaving work at Blossom Point down in La Plata one morning a while back. that place is loaded with turkey and deer but you are only allowed to hunt by permit very limited sections. anyway, i used to take my turkey calls to work and in the evenings i would go outside and call to the birds and just play around alot.. saw some cool action on the video survailance TV's and stuff. well one morning i go to go home and see this huge gobbler cross the road right by the compound so i pull up in my truck and turn it off started sqwaking at him and he is gobbling his butt off at me about 20 yards in the woods.. i thought this was so cool all the sudden BOOOM and down he goes.. some jack hole snuck in there and i guess when he was in range he blasted him, i could hear the pellets going through the woods. man i got out of there and called our security guy on base, he said he went out there but of course that prick was gone.. just goes to show you people do some stupid and highly illegal stuff for a animal...
