Lately I have heard from a couple of people that a spike buck won't ever get any bigger than a spike. Is there any truth to this?

NO, I have seen on TV and read in books that is totally fake and is not true at all. While some bucks have better genetics than others there is not set destination for a spike. This is a wise tale and they showed how on a deer farm the took a sample of several spikes which had radio collers and none of them remained spikes..... some were bigger than others but a Spike is usuially just a young deer.
My two cents..

I have heard the same thing. Shoot all the spikes you can. Could be a late born deer or a buck who may only top out as an eight and never anything more. I'd still like to have a decent eight pointer walk by than just whack spikes.

Could be late born or poor genetics. Maybe not ever a twelve pointer but a trophy for someone it will be in a few years.
