Because if I don't have it when I buy my license they give me a "provisional" license which requires that I have my hunter safety card in my possession...

I did the same thing. I don't have the number off hand, but you can fax them a bunch of info and they will send you a replacement. I will try to track it down in the next few days.

Replacement Card Request -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- If you have previously taken and passed the Maryland Hunter Education Course you may request a replacement card. All requests for replacement cards must be made in writing. There is no charge for this service. If you have taken the course in another state, you will have to contact that state agency to issue you a duplicate card. Maryland recognizes all other states Hunter Education Certification. Every attempt will be made to issue a replacement card. Course records prior to 1990 are incomplete which may result in not being able to issue a replacement card. In cases where we have no record of a person taking the course, we cannot issue a replacement card and the course will have to be taken over.
Please allow 2 weeks for the replacement card to be mailed to you. We do not fax copies of cards. We also do not provide card numbers or take requests for replacment cards over the phone.
You must provide the following information:
Full name Present mailing address Date of birth Location of course and approximate date you took the course Daytime phone number You can FAX the above information to 410-260-3292 or mail to Natural Resource Police, Safety Education Division, 1804 West St., Suite 300, Annapolis, MD 21401.
I just did this myself a few months ago. HAd what was left of my card from '76(!)
Tried to get a replacement years ago,and was told their records didn't go back that far, so retook it at PAX in '92. Lost that card too!
FAXed what wa left of the '76 card with what, where, who, and they mailed me a replacement!

Didn't you used to be able to use an old hunting license to get a new license?
I had to get a replacement card in high school. Wrote to DNR and waited a few weeks and got a new card.
I have been thinking about getting a spare one just in case!

I just got two new cards this year. Call the office and listen to the phone message. They've moved and haven't updated the fax number on the website. They took my request over the phone and I was getting in the mail a few days later. And got another three days after that. I guess they're still checking that old fax number as well...
