Bunch of years ago, I took a 20 yd, broadside shot at a tall 7 pt. Aluminum shafts and 125gr Thunderheads. Shaft appeared to hit the deer and bounce straight back! Deer took off like a rocket, about 80-90 yds, then slowed down and walked off. No limping,no nothing. Gave it 1/2 hour, then got down. Found all but about 3" of the shaft and broadhead. Looked for blood:nothing. Took off work next morning and looked till noon. Nothing:no blood, no deer, no NOTHING!
I beat myself up for days. Actually put down the bow for the rest of the year. Following fall, wife shoots a tall 7 pt with her ML. Fist sized knot on shoulder. Yup, my Thunderhead. It was wedged tightly in the thick ridge that runs down the scapula. Had walled itself off, with some TOUGH material. A cyst, but mostly rock hard.
Deer are TOUGH. It was fat, sleek, and healthy.
Well, it WAS until she shot it!

It sucks to lose deer, a terrible feeling for you not recovering an animal and for the animal to suffer a non lethal shot. Tough to deal with but it does happen. Lessons like that last a lifetime. Like dave said you or someone else may get a crack at him another time.

Tough loss! I can only imagine how you feel. That is the way nature goes man! My buddy lost four deer last year. Three....... was a shoulder shot as well. It was very disappointing to track let alone be the shooter. You'll get a big one soon enough... you always do!

About 15 years ago I shot a deer in October with my bow and tracked him a couple of hundred yards, I found my arrow about forty yards from where I shot him covered in blood. Blood trail disappeared and so did my buck. It was funny, I noticed while I was tracking him that he was still following his scrape line. The really weird part of the story is that a week later I killed that buck from the same stand. I didn't know it was him until I was skinning him and found a 3 slotted hole from my broad head just under the lungs and behind the heart. That small six pointer was still working that same scrape line. So you never know about these deer, you may get another shot at him. Good luck.

OK I got one of these stories too. I try and make it short. Biggest Buck I have EVER seen! 20yrd shot from the ground! 12 ga....drop right there. Moved around for a few mins and drug himself 20 yrds until I put another shot in him. He got up and ran off? Tracked him til dark. Continued the search the next morning. 6 of us looking for him. As THEDEERHUNTER and I are on the ground looking for blood I hear someone scream "Here him comes!" This monster buck ran 20yrds from THEDEERHUNTER and I and all we could do was stare at him (Didn't bring a gun because I thought I would be looking for a dead deer, after two slugs point blank)stupid, stupid, stupid!!!!!! I think THEDEERHUNTER ran after it with a knife ;D we could see it had two shots in him. I don't get it? After that morning I swore I would NEVER hunt another day! I was out there hunting 2 days later! Never found him and to this day he is the only deer I have ever lost. END
