Congrats! That must be a great feeling! How does that work Fox? My son just turned 6 and I know he does not possess the skill to read the test and pass it.... Are they required to read on their own?

He needs to be able to read and comprehend. Austin reads very well for being 7 and as lond as they can comprehend the info they can take it at any age. No age requirement in MD. Both my boys took it at 7 and passed. The instructors can help them read some of the harder words and/or read the test and multiple choice options to them. They have to take the test and pass with an 80 or above. Hunter is a certified instructor and did the firearms safety instruction for this class. He did an outstanding job, the other instructors were not really my idea of what it shoudl have been with having such a mixed audience. There were about 20 people ranging in ago of 7 yrs old (Austin) to a grandmother taking it with her grandsons... Pretty neat let me know if you have any questions or you can always shoot Hunter an email too...

Thanks Fox! He is reading at the 1st grade level being in kindergarden but I am working hard with him! He could pass the field course now but I need to get a gun his size first.

Brett all the guns they use at the course are training guns and they were all a bit heavy for Austin. One thing to understand is most kids this age will not be put in to a situation where they are expected to carry a gun in the field and possibly jump shoot anything. Most kids this age will be taken to a blind or stand and be still hunting deer or turkeys. With the occasional walk with an adult in the woods after squirrels or something. Not many will be expected to do the require field excercises anytime soon alone. You need to make sure he can read and comprehend and I would recommend taking the online course with him and see if he can get through that. even if you have to pay the fee (which I think is only 10$) you could go through some of the questions with him. Or let me know and you can come by and get the book to review with him and see how he does first. There are questions in the back of the book that reflect directly on the content of the chapters.. Let me know..
