Took my son out for his first hunt. We passed up on two does Saturday morning but decided to take a doe in the evening if the opportunity presented itself. After I listened to him take a nap for about an hour I woke him up around 3:30. Almost on cue 4 does came in. He took his time and I coached him to wait for a good broadside shot. After about 10 minutes he was ready to shoot when we heard more deer coming. I told him to hold off to see if a buck was coming in. A giant doe let out long loud bleet as she pushed the other deer off the corn pile and led her other two does with her. I told Dan to try to get a shot on her. It took forever and I thought we would be busted with 7 sets of eyes only 35 yards away. Finally a broadside shot without other smaller deer in front or behind presented itself. I whispered to him to take the shot. He was concentrating hard but she moved again before he could pull the trigger. Finally she turned broadside again and I told him to shoot when he was ready. I finally heard the shotgun blast and the big doe crash down immediatly. It was awesome! A memory I will never forget and I'm sure he won't either. He really got to experience the adrenaline rush for a long time before he was able to take the shot. My only regret is that we didn't hunt Sunday afternoon and watched the Raven game instead. Checked the camera tonight and a really nice buck came in 20 yards from our blind and sniffed right where we gutted the doe. Would have been awesome for him to knock that big boy down. Regardless, he has been proud as a peacock and so am I. Love the youth hunt.
