Anybody getting ready for the youth deer hunt weekend? Gonna be nice to have two days this year, and the weather looks pretty good. With the rut activity I've been seeing the kids should have a great time! Got two younguns hunting here on my place, one's a stone cold killer, but trying to get the other his first deer...

I'm really excited to be taking some great kids out on the youth hunt tomorrow. Meeting Big Fox and his son/a friend down at the shore lease and the weather will be perfect for the kids. Man I hope they all put the smackdown on some tasty critters tomorrow.

Well, 0 for 2 today. Boy I take passed on two does in the morning hoping for a buck, then had to go home when his Mom called because he 'convienently' forgot a school project he had to complete. Buddy brought his son down as well, he missed a forkhorn in the morning and saw some deer in the evening but couldn't get a shot off.

LOL, had a LONG day. Took a kid out for his first deer hunt as part of Young Guns. He high double lunged a big doe at 0800. Lots of blood at the start, but tapered off quick, so he got to work on following up. I don't know who was more worried, but about 50 feet past last drop found her piled up at the bottom of a hill in a wall of briars! He was ecstatic!
I sent him to get the sled out of my truck, and told him to PULL!
Headed over the Bel Alton firehouse for lunch and activities. (Air rifle, archery, retriever demo, etc)
Came back around 2, so I showed him and how to skin and quarter.
Went back out about 3:30, and had a nice button come by soon after, but I told him we ought give it a couple years. He agreed. Had a 4 pt come by right before dark, and came straight on, so no shot. I could HEAR the boys heart pounding, but he kept it together.
Last opening we had, it turned broadside, and he knocked it for a loop. Kicked out with both rear feet, ran about 15 yards, and cartwheeled! Top of heart!
Carried it back over to FD- kids took 20 deer or so, and a few nice bucks! Had dinner, drawing prizes, Dave Butz talked to them, kids got gift bags full of great stuff!
I can't say enough good about Bill and the guys and the job they've done with Young Guns. A class act, top to bottom. Had a lot of community and national support as well.
And honestly, the guides and organizers were smiling at least as much as the kids! I know I was!
Congrats to all who took a kid out!

Made it to the shore lease with my boy Dylan and his buddy Dylan. Got set up early and was a little cold. Made sure I had plenty of warm clothes and hand warmers for the kids along with snacks and stuff to occupy them. Had a nice whitetail buck try to slink by us about 8am or so. Stopped him in a thicket but thought it was clear enough to shot the 243 through about 65-75 yards away. My son could not see the deer from his vantage point but the other boy could. so I handed him the rifle and he took a shot. No sign of blood or hair and I believe a clean miss. Hunter and I searched for any sign of a hit for 30 minutes or so but came up empty. Saw on Sika cross the road but he made it across before I could get one of the kids on him. No more deer for the rest of the day. Long 12 hours in the blind, only taking time out to eat lunch. The kids were REAL TROPPERS and I could not be more proud of them for sticking it out. Sure wish I could have got them a deer but that is the way it goes. Hopefully get some more chances to take them out again as soon as possible.. Congrats to everyone that got out whether you got a deer or not. The time out with the kids is the real TROPHY...
