Just got back from GRSF with my youngest boy. We had a "woulda- shoulda-coulda" moment yesterday evening. Sitting on a finger ridge with .22s, after squirrels. Top of next ridge, 200 yds+, see something black. Turns into a dozen or so turkeys. Start angling down towards us. At about 100 yds, starts to get interesting. 3 gobblers start working UP their hill from the other direction.
By then, hen w/ a few of this years birds are ALMOST where I'd try with a .22 (self imposed limit at a downed log) Birds still up hill a bit, start to turn and go where gobblers were going, (angling up and away)and bunch ALMOST in range follow.
After they were gone, son says "maybe you should have brough the other rifle?" (had a .223 in truck) DOH!
Saw very few birds, and only heard a couple shots over 3 days. LOTS of coyotes singing at sundown, and woke me up the other night at 0230: it was close!
Did burn some hotdogs, catch some smallmouth and generally, had an all around blast!

I don't generally want a fall season here, but today I wish we had one. Bowhunting this morning I was covered up with turkeys, they were roosted all over my woods, several dozen of them. Calling, yelping, fighting all morning when they flew down, counted at least 23 that came out in the field by me, more went the other way. Dang fine morning to be out watching and listening to them!
