Well, I finally shot my FIRST deer ever! Last saturday morning I decided to head out to the stand. My cousins and a few buddies decided, that due to the weather, they were gonna sleep in. So I went to my cousin's stand on a different property instead of our other one.
I threw on the warmer clothing and poncho, grabbed the muzzleloaders (a renegade and wolf) and got to the stand about 6.45am. Talk about cold and rainy! I was definitely the only moron in the stand that morning around the property.
At around 7.30, I see a little deer come out of the woods to a corn and apple pile that was put out earlier in the week. As a rule, I leave the little ones...hopefully to be bigger ones later. ;-) So I just sat and watched. Then about 2 min later and bigger doe comes out and heads over to the pile. At that point I thought, game on for the big one. So I aim the Renegade, put on a #11 cap and wait. The doe is facing me at the corn pile but kept walking out into the plot looking around, but she kept standing broadside. After the 4th time she walked out broadside, I put it on her shoulder and pulled the trigger. The smoke it everywhere and she runs off into the woods to the left of the stand. The little deer ran off the other way. I sat and waited, the little one came back out the woods and went the same way as the other one.
At that point I thought, crap..did I miss again. (The previous saturday I completely missed one). So I climb down and walk over to the corn pile. That's when I see blood and fur everywhere! Talk about a rush of excitement... I was going NUTS! So I start following the trail into the woods. I lost it a couple times, would start at the beginning and go back. Then I finally saw a small path with tracks and blood. that's when I found her next to a tree...DOWN! I get over there though and realize this deer looked a deal smaller than when I was up in the stand. So I'm thinking.. this isn't my deer. But the wound was warm and fresh, I was the only guy out there and this was about 20-30 yards from the stand. So it had to be mine.
I got the sled, hauled her back to the truck, field dressed my first deer and took her home. I then hung her in the backyard, skinned her, quartered up the legs, and skinned the rest of the meat to the bone. Packaged it and in the freezer. My wife thought i was eerily fast for the first time doing this. haha
In the end, it was a great day and even though I was drenched... it was AWESOME!!!! I kept me a trophy to remember and this week I'm making steaks and grinding up the rest for sausage and jerky. I can't eat it, but if my wife and kids find it tasty then that's all the enjoyment for me.
Sorry if this is long... but it was such an awesome feeling! ;D
