Well of course the opening day has come and gone and not very exciting. I went to the Eastern shore and stayed at my buddy Ray's place with some friends. We hunted Ducks on Friday morning and took a few and did alot of shooting .. Went over to the lease to hang my stand and ran into a couple of members preparing for the morning hunt. As I went to the front part of the property I stopped where I was going to hunt and pulled my stand out of the truck. As I stepped off the road and into the woods 5 Sika Hinds stood up not 20 yards from me and watched me hang my stand. I thought well at least they are in the area. I put out some corn and got back to the truck and one of the members pulls up. I shoot the S with him for a few minutes and wish him well on the next days hunt and we go to leave when a VERY large 6 point stag decides he wants to play chicken with our trucks.. Funny how brazen those suckers are the day before the gun season opens. Well he finally decides to get off the road and we leave. Get back in the stand next day at 0500 and sit till 1130am. Went out and got lunch and back to the stand about 1pm. About 5pm the bubble guts got me and I head to the truck to retrieve my paper products. I ease down the road watching the woods carefully as I walk as the wind is really blowing and you really can't hear much. I make it about halfway to my truck when I look to the right and see SIKA EYES staring at me in the pine trees. I ease my gun up and see it is a small hind and to her right there is a BIG SIKA Butt.. I ease around the tree and see a large hind standing there with no idea her whole weekend was about to get ruined. Cracked a shot off and down she went. Funny how stuff works out. Very nice hind and taken with my grand dads Brownign 30-06. COOL..... hunted the rest of the weekend with limited success. Did see a monster stag on my buddys place way to far to shoot. but a cool encounter any way. Hunted the BlackWater refuge Monday with Art and Osprey and was in some serious pain with a bad back and neck but toughed it out and was there to watch Osprey blast a cool looking spike Sika from the killing tree. Glad it is my turn in that tree next year.. Good luck all...
