What are your thoughts on the rut in Southern Maryland? I have had people say its over and others say its in full force. Also i bought a grunt call from dicks, any suggestions how and when to use it? Thanks

Rut- It can be full force at farm A but farm B right down the street has nothing going on. Depends on where you are at. My personal experience only bow hunting for 5 years in SOMD- first week of November is always the best time. I kill all my buck with bow first week of Nov. Killed a buck on a scrape line while he was feeding Oct. 2nd then killed my bonus Nov.2nd while he was cruising by himself. I never see chasing. I saw a big buck tending a doe this year but that was it. I only kill bucks when they cruise by themselves.
Best time to use a grunt call from what I have read is anytime. I called in my first buck this year with my grunt tube. Heard him rubbing a tree and when I grunted he came in. Nice 8pt but I let him go. You can grunt when you see bucks which has never worked for me, or when you don't see them just to see if there are any close that will respond. I have killed all of my bucks when I have been completely quiet.

I wish more people would give their experiences on here. I am always wanting to read and have conversation about hunting. Last year I rattled in two bucks. It was my first time. i grunted while I rattled. It was the same day. They did not come close enough. I guess cause they did not see another deer. Decent bucks too. I am thinking that there is no competition around here and that is why bucks do not respond as much as you see on managed farms on TV. I am learning everyday! Would like to hear more opinions and experiences though

I shot a younger doe yesterday that was being chased for over an hour by a 9 pointer (I got him too ;D). The two of them came by me 3 different times.

I saw some chasing a few weeks ago, only one morning of it, but the bucks I've seen and killed have all seemed like they've been cruising for does, alone and moving even this week...

ok im going to get on the conversation as well... i have grunted a few times during bow season never during gun seasons and i havge had a few come in just not close enough to take a shot. i would also like to add the "BUCK BOMBS" SUCK!!! i have used them in many occasions to give em a try and nothing ever comes from using them never ever will i waste my money on them!!!!!!!!!! but none the less i do not only hunt bucks i hunt deer for the meat so if a doe walks infront of me shes going down if it happends to be a buck hes going down big or small..

Wife saw two separate bucks Saturday with their heads up does backsides! One I killed was alone, but running like he'd been spooked. I finally stopped him with a bunch of grunts.
I've had mixed results. Had a buck ignore me on November 7 a few years back. Same buck, Nov 14, ran down a hill, crossed a creek, and jumped a fence to get to me after I mouth grunted a few times! I punched him thru within a yard or two of my tree! Almost fell I had to lean so far to clear my stand!
So I think timing is EVERYTHING. They HAVE to be in the mood to respond. I've been hanging tarsal glands from bucks in areas other than where they were killed. (Strange buck) Some are ignored, and other places get torn up.
Years ago, I trapped a big farm in Cecil county where deer hunting was not allowed. Some tremendous bucks.
I'd "freshen" scrapes myself. ;D Some were ignored, some abandoned and some torn all to hell.
Doesn't hurt to try stuff, that's how we learn. And if I'm not getting a shot, I'll try something, anything, to try to make something happen sometimes. Nothing ventured, nothing gained.

Dave, I do the scrape freshen trick too, pee in every one I see (lots of coffee helps!). Wallows too. It's amazing how bad they'll tear them up after that!
