Took a half day off yesterday form work, hit "The Tackle Box" (local hunting/fishing store) and bought some Special Golden Estrous on the way to the farm for my afternoon/evening hunt. Not a big fan of scents but it has worked for me in the past on a few occasions and the lack of deer movement this past week I felt I had to try something different. When I got in the woods a little ways I attached a drag line to one of my boots and walked in avoiding all overhanging limbs or from contacting anything that may brush up against me and leave my scent on the drag line trail and then I hung the wick about 30 yards cross wind of my stand. I was settled in by 1:30 and saw absolutely nothing for the next 2 hours+. At 3:55 I heard the distinct walking of a deer heading my direction. It was a heavy buck with a good frame but little points. I made up my mind I would try him if I got the opportunity. The deer came in and fed on acorns 50 yards away for about 5 minutes and then the wind shifted. The deer smelt the drag line and estrous I could tell by his body language! He immediately made a B line straight toward the wick hanging in the tree. I made the shot while he was walking and hit him back much further than I wanted to. The arrow zipped right through him, he ran about 40 yards and sat there for 5 minutes motionless. Then he started to lose his balance and over he went. He tried to get up and just could'nt. He layed there and died peacefully for about 20-30 minutes. I thought it was a horrible shot but it did the trick within view of my stand. He ended up being 6pts, 17" wide and weighed 175lbs on the hoof and dressed out at 140lbs. Not a monster but he definately got my blood boiling. That special golden estrous ended up being the best $10 I have spent in a while.
