big fox...i know what ur saying....actually i have a 1yr old who i can't wait to take hunting. i also took my 12yr old nephew hunting for his first time this yr....guess what, i told him to shoot anything he wants....he shot a spike. going forward i told him he should be thinking to make the next one bigger, then the next even bigger etc....trying to teach him the some ethics or atleast give him a goal to keep interested. but if the rules were 3 pts or more....he would have been fine shooting a doe or maybe he would have gotten lucky with a six or bigger. don't forget, 3 on a side could stll be a 75incher

I totally agree, i just think to put a law on it will discourage alot of young hunters who will not get the adrenaline rush or the excitement of getting a deer if you have to wait for a 3 or better to come out.. With hunting property disappearing anyway sometimes you just have to take a small one to fill the freezer or get the kids excited...
The best is watching deer hunting on TV and listening to my 2 and 4 year old running up to the TV and pointing at the deer saying "there it is there it is".... and i just sit and smile as my wife walks by and calls me a sicko.. ha ha ha,, she wanted girls so she could sit home and do hair and play dolls, WAIT TILL I BRING THE BOYS HOME COVERED IN DEER BLOOD UP TO THEIR EARS AND THEM LAUGHING LIKE HYENAS.... I CAN'T FREAKING WAIT.........

I don't think that a point rule is a good idea. Like others have said everyone's idea of a trophy is different. I have only killed 2 racked bucks in the 12 years that I have been hunting. the first was a basket 6 and the 2nd was a 18" 8 pointer. The 6 I did a euro mount and the 8 is on the wall also. I do how ever think that being allowed to take 6 bucks a year is way too many. I think that 3 a year is plenty and while 36 does a year is alot how many people actually kill 36 does. I like to fill the freezer as much as the next guy but the most does I've taken in one year is 5. I'd rather shoot a nice doe rather than a small buck. a coupleof years ago whn I only had public land to hunt I would not have thought twice about shooting a 4 pointer. If you cut back on the bag limit for bucks than most people will let those smaller bucks walk. Just my 2 cents worth.

Interesting topic and I think everyone has valid points on the subject. Some say the PA law is rediculos some say its the best thing that happened. I personally like the idea of some sort of restriction but I also know that it is fools gold. How many people do you think or know kill a buck, what ever size, and then check in 2 phantom doe kills so they can go buck hunting again? I think having to shoot bucks is a mental disease. I will be the first one to admit that I trophy hunt. I put more pressure on myself to fulfill my obligation of donating at least 2-3 deer to FHFH every year while trying to put 1-2 in my freezer. So trophy hunting is secondary to a point. I go out every hunt and think this could be the day I get a chance at the big one. I use the rut and the first week of gun season to really trophy hunt. I may get 1 trophy a year or may not get any for 2 years. I will not shoot young bucks. I have shot some scrubs but I am not sure that is always right either. Every year I see alot of young bucks that isn't even a problem. I hunt 80 acres and I saw myself 5 different young bucks and had 3 of them with in 10-15 yards bow hunting. Hopefully there still walking. Deer management is a personal preference, I wish everyone would do it but that isn't reality. As for kids my son is just starting to get into hunting. Loves goose hunting but can't sit on stand for mor then an hour or so. He loves deer hunting and going with me but hay he's only 8 and his ability to sit longer will come. I would let him shoot what ever he saw but I would also teach him that the next one needs to be bigger and so on until he takes only mature bucks. We have been managing our property for the last 5 years and I see the difference and so has my son. There is my 2 cents not much different then anyone elses it seems

IMO Early muzzleloader puts a lot of pressure on the deer I have been bowhunting for a month. I could stand to see that one go away. I wish the season opened on Sept. 1st instead of the 15th. More early season is a great time to take a nice buck, in velvet maybe. Antler restrictions would cause a few oops deer, left to rot for fear of getting in trouble and until our herd is declining in quality, isn't needed. Youth hunts I believe are a great thing. Todays young hunters are tomorrows veteran hunters. Get them hooked on the outdoors and watch the sport carry on as it has for hundreds of years.

i agree on the earlier start for bow season although i actually prefer bow anyways so maybe im biased, could you imagine being a kid in a stand on the junior hunt and slowly here comes the biggest buck youve ever seen before only when you put the scope on him its only a 4 point !!!!!

You made a good point - the new check-in system in Maryland allows for these "phantom doe kills". I am sure a lot of people have done this, though not the proper thing to do.
I usually take the first two or three doe I see early season, just to get it out of my system so I can concentrate on bucks when the rut and pre-rut begin.

Yea i think so. I think that the number of nice bucks would rise. I mean im only 16 and this is my first year hunting but i have seen small bucks and let them go by even though i would have a nice shot for my first buck, just hoping to drop a nice one. But if people are shooting small bucks that means less big deer. I dont know but i love hunting and spend as much time as i can in the stand. Some times i even find myself researching deer just for the fun of it, i've definitly fallin in love with the sport.

just think back sitting in your stand it does not have to be a buck to get the blood flowing. sitting in your stand for hours nothing then all of a sudden crash of the leaves snap of a twig your heart starts racing and you slowly look aroud and see that fat old squirrell that has been hogging your corn. I sit out many times and just enjoy the quite and the chance to just slow down and be one with nature kill or not kill it is just nice to be able to go out and see what many people never slow down and take the time to appreciate.... even not seeing anything for a month i am still going to miss it after the 31st... until next season !!!!
