Anybody know where I can get a few/bunch of box traps to use? I have an infestation of big raccoons and foxes on the lease I am on and need to trap them and get them out of there. I was told they are hammering the turkey population. If anyone knows someone who traps coon and fcxes and has box traps I could borrow I would give them all the critters I catch. Could keep them alive if the person wants them for training of coon dogs or just kill them and bring them to anyone who wants them. Let me know.

You of course mean in the fall for the coons, right Fox? Season is closed on them now, although you can kill foxes all year in Dorchester (if you're talking about the sika lease).

Yeah of course that is what I meant. I am just trying to get the ground work layed out now so I am ready when the season opens... I do need to get over there with my predator call and try to hammer a few foxes. sign of them everywhere over there.

Big Fox: answered your email. What Osprey said. Good luck "hammering" predators by calling. Very low %, and very inefficent method. Box traps as well for that matter.
ps. you do not want to get caught holding or transporting live animals taken from the wild without proper permits from the DNR. You would rather get caught smuggling dope.

coons will demolish them turkey eggs , fox on the other hand will eat them and the baby chicks but your main problem is with the coons i read a study years ago that said this time of year when the fox is providing for her pups she is on a high diet of moles ,

Thanks for the heads up. as you can see I haven't done much or any homework that I needed to before posting my first post. I have to figure out how to spend some more time over there and do what I can legally to get the population under control. Seems like the raccoons may be the biggest problem right now but with talking to some of the other members the foxes are pretty bad too. Will do a bunch more research and when the trapping seaosn comes back in I will be getting in touch with you Morgan for some helpful advice. Thank you for taking the time to answer my email and all the advice on some things to do in preperation for the coming trapping season. Look to put a dent in those dang critters in Nov....

coons will demolish them turkey eggs , fox on the other hand will eat them and the baby chicks but your main problem is with the coons i read a study years ago that said this time of year when the fox is providing for her pups she is on a high diet of moles , If you think a fox with young ones to feed will run past a nest full of eggs or a bunch of chicks in search of a mole you are sadly mistaken. They take whatever is in front of them and easiest to catch. Take a look at an active fox den down here sometime and you can see the progression of prey items laying about. If that fox den is anywhere near the marsh she will kill 100 muskrats per year feeding the pups. Hence the reason for the year round open season on Red Foxes in Dorchester Co. Foxes will catch and kill the easiest item available at that particular moment in time in the particular habitat. The USDA and the various coastal states spend big bucks killing coons and foxes on the barrier islands to protect nesting shore birds, Piping Plovers to be exact. They would not do it if all the foxes were eating moles.

LOL, saw your email and was going to tell you to contact Morgan, as he's over that side. I've caught a few foxes in box traps, but they were either young and stupid, and/or in poor health (mange, etc) Did manage to catch a couple in double open ended box traps on trails, in tall grass, but wouldn't count on that!
Just pay a BIG bounty on them, and folks will line up to clean them out for you! Good luck with it Fox-if you need anything, give me a holler!
