Shotgun opener is just around the corner. What does everyone think of how the rut has played out so far? Will we still have some rut action going into next weekend? Id like to think so. I really think that these next few days we should get out as much as possible and try to grab as much rut action as we can, because come next Saturday it will turn into Shotgun action....

i shot a nice 9 point a couple years ago on opening day of shotgun . he was chasing a doe so i am always hesitant to kill a doe forst or second day of shotgun. but depends on what you are looking for. i need to fill my freezer this year so i may be a doe slayer, but i always say that with the hopes of a big boy stepping out..

I think we will have some action from what I have been reading from magazines and other sites. I am going to sit in my stand all day!!! If I am not mistaken, this will be the time that the mature deer will be out and about trying to find yearlings that are ready to be bred. I am finding that it is different for every area. Last night I had another nice buck running some does in my yard. He will have to wait for next year!!! This morning my friend told me that he was on public land hunting where there are literally only one or two other hunters that hunt that area. He didn't see anything. Thought he might have heard something in the distance but he didn't see anything this morning and was disappointed. Going back out this afternoon, I'll give you all a report when I talk to him. It will be hit or miss for some but I will not leave my stand inless I have to! Good luck!!

Being as thanksgiving is early in the month this year. I also think that some late rutting action will be going on. I give it about three days of guns going off to have alot of the mature bucks go nocturnal again. They didn't get old by being dumb.

I have a small pine grove where I hunt. THink it'd be a good idea to hunt the pines, swamp edge, or near thick cover??

You may want to hunt the edge of it since the deer will be moving around on Saturday, possibly heading for thick cover that will offer them some protection (so they think).

In the morning I hunt where I would normally bowhunt. Deer are gonna keep in there patterns. But in the afternoon I like to set up in or near thick cover and try to get sneaking around, avoiding the gunfire. ;D
