Here's the first one I took , the second year out there, 2003. First year I had shots at 2 mulies and a whitetail, but missed them all. It was so cold my bow was freezing - had moisture in the cam axles, it froze and slowed the turnover so much that arrows were dropping 2 feet at fifteen yards. Bought a new Hoyt on the way home at Cabelas that trip!! Anyway, this one was a long shot, 50 yards, he was mixed in with 7 other bucks within 100 yards of me, all hot after a doe in the sage brush. He was raking some sage with his antlers when I shot, went about 80 yards, bedded under a cedar and expired. Very happy day, had been after mulies for several trips to other places and had been unsuccesful on anything decent until ND.

Any time you want to get a trip together I know the place for a guided trip, or can suggest public areas and fill you in on tag info. ...and that's the small one, I've topped myself each year. Anybody ever take a picture of the buck they've killed - before they shot it? And I mean live, in person, not with a trail cam?

2004 season, live, passing at 20 yards, "Hmmm, only a 3x3 I thought" until he turned and looked at me... ...then it was 'oh crap, drop the camera and grab the bow!!!'

Last year when I went out I told myself I was going to hold out for even bigger, wanted 30+ inches wide or 180+ score (the big 3x3 was 29" wide, close, and not bad for field judging, but still not the magic mark). Saw this one and thought he'd be the candidate, got this pic from 100 yards away, but couldn't get closer, just not a spot for a stalk.. ...a week later I got on him a quarter mile from where I'd first seen him, pushing around a smaller 4x4 by some does. 30 yards through both lungs!... Scored 181" gross, 31 3/8" wide. He had a hog neck on him, one of the biggest necks I've ever seen. My taxidermist said he had to order the biggest form any company makes!! This year is going to be rough now, how do I top that one?!?!?! And my taxidermist has already told me not to come home unless I get another live picture to go with it.

If you can do it, then do it, you won't regret heading west for a trip even if you don't score. If you can't do it, (money, time, spouses, etc.) do it anyway!

I grew up in Utah and have family in California, Utah, Texas, and Colorado, we need to get a BUCKWILD deer\Elk hunt together in the next couple of years and just go. Texas we could hunt Mule deer, White tails and Hogs, Colorado would be good for deer and Elk and California is good for Black Tail deer, Utah is great for Mulies some Elk, and alot of small game (Jack Rabbits.) . we just need to get together plan a trip and go.
