Has anybody gotten one of the new whitetail growl calls? Drury makes one, as does Primos. Something new this year. I got the Drury, the DVD with it shows some impressive deer footage of the call. I'm going to start playing with it in a week or two (timing should be right). I think just the fact that it's something new every buck in the woods hasn't heard hunters playing with all season could make it work for a while.

Excuse my ignorance, but I had not even heard of a growler call. I would do as you mentioned & try it in a couple of weeks - something new will probably work.

I saw the wildlife obsesion tv show about the call. Mature bucks make the growl when they have some kinda of strong emotion. Impressive footage of deer growling. I'm usually the first in line to try new stuff like that but I was gonna wait to see how others do with it. Let me know how it works.

I'll let you know how my field testing goes. Figure I'll start hitting it end of next week, although I may try it if I go for whitetail during blackpowder.

Tried it yesterday morning, but no response, although none to grunting either and didn't see a deer. More testing required, guess I'll have to go hunting!

Even field and stream talks about the growler call. They say to use it in late pre-breeding through peak breeding. November 7-25. Don't use it Pre-rut, post-rut. Late October and early December. This months issue page 73.

I really can't wait to try it in North Dakota with all the big whitetails running around the river bottoms out there, that could get interesting! Hit it once last night, but it was so windy even I could barely hear it!!

Does it sound like the growl of a dog or a modified grunt. When are you leaving for the mulies and will you have a computer up there to check in and let us know how your doin?

It starts out as a grunt (I've been using as just a deep grunt some, too) and gets harsher when you blow hard.
I'm planning on leaving on the 9th (although I may delay until the 12th so I can catch youth day for a kid, if possible). I'll have my laptop, generally get to town once a week to e-mail columns home to the paper, send pics out, etc. I'll have some updates. My Dad is coming out Thanksgiving week this year, can't wait to finally have him in camp!

This call can be used many ways. I have Primos growler or Grunt and Weez what ever you want to call it. I really like it because you can call soft or loud plus get the growl in there when needed. That growl is really used during the rut and late pre rut, it is a territorial grunt that says you are about to get your ass kicked if you don't leave my area. This morning I had a 4 pointer moving through a clear cut about 130 yds off. I hit him with a contact grunt and stopped him. The short of the story is that I grunted him right to me for a 5 yd bow shot. I didn't shoot the young deer but the whole experience was awesome. I'm going back out tonight to a different stand location. I am also starting to play with some scent as well. I think it is to early for doe in heat over my way so I am using buck torsil and buck in rut right now. I haven't had any luck as of yet that I could pin point. This shouldweekend should be interesting at least I hope so.
