They did it to me again!!! Saturday it was raining so hard in Mont county I was out of the woods by 0930. Went to a different area Monday. Set up on one trail early but no action after a couple of hours so I moved to different location, a funnel on the inside corner of a field. I got a ground blind set up and thought what the heck I might as well put out some scent. I put up a wick with doe urine and added a small drop of estrus gel. I had nothing to lose so I gave a grunt now and again and hit the rattle bag a couuple of times. After about an hour I was cramped up so I slid back about 3 feet and leaned up against a tree trunk and of course had my bow across my lap. I was daydreaming about 12 point bucks when something caught me eye off to my right, you guessed it a nice a 8 pt, 10 yards away. He looked like he was coming in with a purpose (as opposed to just wandering around) he stuck around for about 15 seconds and decided was something to be avoided. That was the only deer all day.

It's still cool that you had a buck come up to you so close on the ground. I know what you mean about being ready for hours (holding you bow in position, standing up, and alert) then the min you sit down or lay your bow down a freakin monster walks up on you. For that very reason I am always alert...for the first few hours that is ;D ;D

Sounds like he may have had some interest in the scent. Might be time to start using a bit.

I made a decision this weekend that I will kill a buck from the ground before I buy a tree stand, after that, look out!! In giving myself a challenge I find purpose.

That is a good goal to have. I haven't gotten one from the ground. I've just always had a treestand.

I know the first buck my dad shot with a bow was on the ground at about 10 yards. I have never had the patience or time to devote to ground hunting, it can be a very different game.

My very first deer was from the ground. It was a three pointer. I was leaning against a tree with my bow resting on my foot. The buck came over this hill right to me. It came within two feet of me. It was soooooo... close It would have brushed up on me but when he got within 2 feet of me I guess he smelled me ;D. My heart was blowing-up. He looked right at me, turned and ran 25yd and as he stopped to look back I arrowed him through the heart...Awesome first deer.

When I went Bear hunting I really wanted to take it from the ground but the outfitter did not have any archery ground blinds. He said he might set some up for next year. I got a message from him the other day, 65 hunters - 57 bear almost 88%! he had 3 moose hunters take 2 excellent moose. He said he has some footage and will get it to me when it is ready. I think this weekend will be private land just outside Antietem Battlefield.

Never shot one from the ground (with a bow) but sounds like its time to use some scent to get these bucks a little worked up.

What's a treestand? I've taken almost all my bucks off the ground, only use treestands for half my sika hunting and some occasional whitetail hunting.

I've been thinking about geting a recurve bow and ground hunting. Maybe next year!
I want to make my own bow, and think I will try after this season.

Last time I was ground hunting I think I fell asleep. Being twenty feet up has the tendancy to keep me awake. Most of the time I see deer on the ground is when they are running away flashing thier white flags.
