When does the Maryland Rut seem to come around. We all know that weather has a lot to play with how and when whitetails will rut, but lets try to see if we can pattern the Maryland Rut.

IT usually is the 1st week in nov. but last year it started nov 15th. The key is to watch for the ful moon after halloween. A cold front always helps.

I was reading an article today about this and it said in our latitude the rut generally starts around the second full moon after the autumnal equinox. I am pretty sure this is the first.

I remember as a kid hunting in Cumberland opening of shotgun and we were always a good 2-3 weeks late. I hadn't heard using the moon phases to time the rut, let's see if it is right.

I would agree that the first to second week of Novemeber is prime time. And I would also agree that the moon phase plays a part, but the weather is a huge key. Warm weather at the wrong time will drastically throw the brakes on this whole issue. Starting the middle of the last week of October is a good time to start paying attention to the 7 day forcasts. I personally like the pre-rut because that big deer your tring to arrow may end up 2 miles away as soon as the rut starts and he starts running a doe that isn't yet ready. Then again a big one you've never seen before may end up in your sights during the rut for that very same reason. A big mind game with no real solution the way I see it. Regardless, I love it.

Good points. I think it is that chance of seeing something that I have never seen before that keeps me in the woods. You never know what is going to come out from behind that tree.

I think that is the main reason we all hunt. Any given day could produce a hunt of a lifetime. I have been contact grunting lately(Non agressive calls) to which deer have come in to investigate. Mostly young bucks but like you said, You never know!
