So...after zero scouting and a little hope, I managed to shoot my first bird this morning!
I arrived at my hunting spot at around 5:45, walked to one side of the field, did a few owl calls...nothing! Started to get a little bit disappointed, but it was hard to hear since it was merely rush hour on Route 5 which is only a mile away maybe. So, I walked to the other side, before I could even hit the owl call, I heard some gobbling. Probably a couple hundred yards away. Decided to go set up in the woods in a bottom and hope for the best. The only thing that worried me, was a stream being between myself and where I could hear, mulitple birds at this point. Knowing that sometimes they can be stubborn about coming across gullies and the like, I decided to roll with it and just set up. Probably about 6:05 now. Did some clucks and a fly down cackle. Birds were gobbling like crazy. 4 in front of me and another off to my right. I'd do occasional yelps, but did not want to call too much, heard of too many people making that mistake. They were definently approaching fast! When I heard a hen, I got a little more agressive with the yelps. Before I knew it, Tom was in front of me 30 yards away, struttin' like a mofo. The way I was sitting, I had to shoot left handed, which kinda sucked considering my left eye isn't worth a damn! Aimed for the head. BOOM! The 3 1/2" Federal Supremes put him on his a$$! It was 6:15!!!
He weighed 22 Lbs. had a 10" beard and 1" spurs. I came to the realization it must've been my Scent-A-Way deoderant I put on this morning that made this such an easy hunt. Keeping me very concealed! Haha!
What a blast! Just finally glad to have killed my first bird after hunting these things for nearly 9 years.
