I've always wanted to go elk hunting. I'd say that it's #1 on my list right now.
BTW, Nice shirt!

I mean a BIG elk. The real deal. Sika are very cool, but if I were to go on a long trip it would be for a full-size elk. Sika are only a day trip - a long one though!

Hey davep, do you need to apply for lottery to hunt in colorado?? I elk hunted in 1991 through 1997 in colorado and back then it was open to nonresident for a license. We shot these elk on the White RIVER NAT.FOREST .It is located in the northwestern part of the state. You talk about some rugged terrain. We packed in with horses to about 9000 ft. Got dumped on by snow on a number of occasions. Brought plenty of beer and blackberry brandy to keep us warm at night. Man i hope you pull a lottery so you can expierance this. good luck!!

Depended on the area/zone until a few years ago: now everything is draw, even archery.(bow was over the counter tag) A buddy has a spot where he should be able to draw every other year.Went last year (well, '06) and him and his dad killed two elk,and should draw again this year with their '07 point)
The area I'm shooting for has very limited tags and very big elk! Took a non-res 16 years/points this past year! And that's with a muzzleloader. About 20 with a rifle.
Some areas you can get multiple cow tags.Supply about exceeds demand so you have REAL good odds of drawing. I'm going to try to pull a cow tag the next year or two, just to get out and get some experience/familiarity with the area.
I'm patient.Took me 10 years to pull a Maine moose tag. My brother has put in there for the last 20 w/out drawing!
One things for sure, you ain't going to draw if you don't apply. Lots of states let you apply for the point only,so you can go ahead and start building points/saving money until you can swing it.
I'm even building Georgia gator points!
