Only made it out one time for January. Tweaked my shoulder, rotator cuff, and had to switch to a crossbow for the rest of the season. Went one time with it, but it's just such a hassle to hunt with, and nowhere near as accurate as my compound. Wishing I hadn't passed all those deer back in October now, that afternoon I saw 25 is haunting me a bit.

it is ok to let a few walk. for me just knowing i was there on the right day & at the right time. means i got it right. the killing is the easy part. as tasty as they are it's ok. i am sure you wont starve. your probably eatin whitetail anyway. as far as the bad shoulder it bites. i have a torn cuff with delaminated tendens. been putting off surgery for over a year. with cortizone shots every three months. they help for a while. but they feel like a pole barn spike comeing out when you get them. you have a good day

I made it out once in Jan. Marsh was completly frozen. Every step I took I would fall through the ice and scrape my shins and knees. Six hunters= Zero sika spotted.

that is good information. late season is extremly tough 6 - 0 are not good odds. no wonder no one is braggin. think i will try to get set up for the first week & fight the bugs. try to get up on somthing before they turn nocturnal. from the hunting pressure.as i can not be there for the rut. i see this as my best chance. ok what is the pro's and con's with this idea. besides bugs that bite.

Three things to keep in mind. 1 - Heat. Can be still close to 100 and humid sometimes in the first week, so be ready in case it happens. Conversely, I've seen opening day of bow season with lows around 50, but that's abnormal.
2. Hurricanes. May not happen, but one coming up the coast will end your hunt before it begins, and a bad one in the summer could really mess up the deer. Few years ago TS Isabel flooded the whole southern half of the county, deer were pushed out of many spots and didn't act completely normal again until the next year.
3. Bugs. Don't underestimate them. It's not just a few skeeters, they can be horrible. I work Mosquito Control for the state and have seen the skeeters at 150 per minute down in sika country, so thick you can hardly breathe or see. Take us seriously when we tell you about bug gear. Get a Thermacell.

got my thermocel 2 years ago for bear hunting. bugs get so thick up north you think night fall is coming early. and skeeters that look like humming birds. i would never underestimate how horrible thay can make a trip. the only thing i think i couldent handle would be that kind of heat. here in the north country 100 is unheard of. just aint right. i would need A C in a hunting shack. i would melt. the heat would cause me to postpone. this is somthing i had not even thought of yet. thanks

Stick with the middle of October. Heats down a bit and the rut is in full swing. But the skeeters are still bad. I was still getting bit in January.

i wished i could . but i have guys from kansas & north carolina coming up for some michigan whitetail fun. this is why i must come early. no later than the first week of oct. time dictates that i should do this in sept.if i want to come this year. and i hate to put it off again. as things in life change so fast.
