Assateague Island State Park
Hunting Plan Proposal
Location: Assateague State Park, Berlin, MD.
Hunting Zones: 3
Hunters Per Zone Per Day: Zone 1 (Park Entrance): 4
Zone 2 (Bayberry Dr): 6
Zone 3 (East of Ocean Dr.): 2 ADA / HFV sites
(1 hunter on F-Loop & 1 hunter on I-Loop)
Hunting Dates: November 13, 2006 – January 31, 2007.
Shooting Hours: One-half hour before official sunrise to one-half hour after official sunset.
Bag Limit: Deer taken during the ASP hunt will count against the Region B bag limit.
Harvest Check-In: Statewide Telecheck System:
Internet at www.gamecheck.dnr.state.md.us or by calling the Big Game Registration Phone Line at 1-888-800-0121.
Hunter Qualifications: All hunters must possess and present a valid Maryland hunting license and stamps, as required.
Reservations: Daily sign-in required. Hunters must sign-in on board to be placed adjacent to Pump House #1 in Day Use parking lot. Hunters will put name and vehicle information on sheet in slot designating a corresponding numbered parking space. ADA / HFV parking spots only to be used by hunters in possession of WHS issued HFV permits. Daily sign-in sheets will be posted approximately one-hour prior to legal shooting time each morning.
First two weeks of hunt (11/13 – 11/24) only: One-half the daily hunting slots will be available through phone-in reservation system. Remaining one-half daily slots will be awarded on first-come, first-served basis by recording name, etc. on daily sign-in sheet.
From opening day of the statewide firearms season (11/25) through the end of archery season (12/31/07): All daily hunting slots will be awarded on first-come, first-served basis by recording name, etc. on daily sign-in sheet.
Hunting Sites
and Parking Areas: Designated parking areas will distribute hunters appropriately. Parking spaces will be located at Day Use lot and existing improved pull-offs along Ocean Drive. Hunters allowed to choose stand sites at their own preference, but must remain within Zone associated with that parking spot as follows:
Parking spots #1 - #4: Hunt in Zone 1;
Parking spots #5 - #10: Hunt in Zone 2:
HFV permit holders using accessible Zone 3, must hunt from Loop identified on sign-in sheet.
Scouting: Scouting will be allowed beginning Nov. 6, 2006. Date selected to allow for scouting period after closure of campground, prior to start of hunting dates.
Hunting Gear: Hunters must use archery gear only, including vertical bows, or crossbows during the regulated crossbow season, or with a crossbow permit issued by the Department.
Boundaries/Safety Zones: All land boundaries are clearly marked. Safety zones will be posted around Day Use Area and environmental center.
No hunting or shooting within 50’ of Bayberry Drive and MD Rt. 611 is allowed.
No shooting to, from, or across Ocean Drive and Bayberry Drive, as per State Regulations.
Access: 7 parking areas have been identified, and uniquely numbered, which will provide reasonable access to all hunting zones for the maximum number of hunters allowed at one time, which is 12.
Public Review: After internal Project Review, post proposal on DNR website. Announce proposal availability for public comment through News Release. Accept comments for two-week period. Review comments, and adjust proposal as warranted.
Public Notification: Announce 2006-07 hunting program through News Release. In subsequent years, publish information in Annual Guide to Hunting and Trapping in Maryland.
