I had never heard the term "western shore" until someone on this site posted it. I honestly thought they meant to say western MD but I didn't give it much thought. After hearing it a few more times i finally understood what was meant. I get a kick out of the term. I can't believe in 27 years I had never heard it. The term eastern shore I have heard since I was a kid and just figured this side of the state didn't have a nickname. Does everyone on the eastern shore use the term Western shore? Maybe I 'm the only one who thinks it is funny as hell.

I've heard it only a couple of times in 48 years, I think it must be relatively new because I've only heard it in the last few years. I've got some family in Salisbury and they don't use that term, they always say " on your side of the bridge". Western shore does sound kinda funny, I guess because the only shore we have is the bay? Maybe Osprey or Tuckcut have some input on this one, I think their from the "eastern shore". Enlighten us guys.

So where is this western shore anyway? I've looked at the maps and can't seem to locate one. Maybe my GPS needs an update from Garmin because it doesn't show one either, lol. Maybe you flat landers on the eastern shore could help me out here??

Western shore is used to describe everything across the big ditch from our beloved Eastern Shore. Proper use dictates Eastern Shore always be capitalized, whereas western shore is never done so (hey, I write for a paper). It's not necessarily complimentary.

As for western shore vs western Maryland, western shore includes western MD, but western MD is a more specific locale. The uninformed will tell you western MD starts around Frederick, but true western Marylanders, also those of us who have lived in or attended Frostburg, define it as beginning somewhere between Hancock and Sideling Hill.

I had a feeling that the term western shore wasn't a good thing, lol. Sorry for the non-capitalization error, you'll have to excuse me I'm from the western shore and "we don't git all the schoolin 'at we shuld". Thanks for the hook up with Tuckcut, we talked on the phone for almost a half hour. He seems like a great guy and by the way he said those pork crab brats should be in the stores in about four weeks. He said he has a list of e-mail addresses that he will notify people when there in the stores, I sent him mine so he could add me to the list.

I live just east of Frederick and I consider western Md. to be west of Hancock but my my buddy who lives just north of Oakland says it only includes Allegheny and Garrett Counties. One thing for sure, I think Maryland has the best of both worlds with the flat land of the Eastern Shore (I think I've caught on to this capitalization thing), the mountains of western Maryland and all the land changes in between.

I've called it (and heard it called) western shore since I can remember (I'm 22 now). As previously mentioned, it's anything on that side. In fact, I didn't realize there was a difference b/n the western shore and western MD until college...

When I moved to Salisbury for college was the first time I heard the term western shore. People would ask me where I moved from and I would tell them Southern Maryland, "oh your from the western shore huh" I thought they were talking about California?
