I want to buy a good turkey call for this year, I have a $25 Cabelas gift card and willing to spend a little more on a nice call, I was thinking maybe a slate call. Any suggestions???

My favorite is still my Primos Freak. It's got straps that go around your leg and hold it in place so you can call one handed when a bird is close, and it sounds really good.

I love that Primos gear, I'll have to put that on my shopping list.

Only advice I could give on this one is to play with any call before you buy it. With all the call companies out there, I sometimes think they spend more time and energy on the packaging and look of the call rather then the quality. A call might look cool with the apparent functionality it depicts but if it sounds "dead" its worthless. If I had to pick one out of a catalog without testing it, I would have to go with a Cody. Though one of my favorites is a Primos with Frictionite.

I have had really good luck with the CODY calls. The slate is easy to use an sounds great.

I have the Primos power crystal slate along with a old slate a professional caller gave me when I was like 17 (I was in the NWTF Jakes calling contest). Anyway, the old one is soft and I use it for when birds are like 75 yards out. The other is good for 75+ and is really consistent and easy to use. What ever slate you decide on, being able to get consistent yelps is most important. The crystal: shop.primos.com/pc-481-37-power-crystal.aspx-Fever p.s. Everyone has their favorite. Basically practice makes perfect. You'll have to learn the quirks and sweet spots.

One thing to keep in mind whichever slate you decide on - get a bunch of different strikers. I always carry at least 4 different types (plastic, carbon and several wood species) and some sound better on certain calls and even on certain days. Really humid days ony one or two will sound good, sometimes I can't figure out why one sounds better. The striker packaged with a call won't always sound the best on it.

Just ordered the FREAK call. Hardcore has one and I remember how nice it was to keep it on your leg.

It amazes me how picky these dang birds can be. On youth day I had two slates and 8 different strikers, and only one combination of slate and striker set them gobbling that day. I could hit all the other combinations and even the box calls, and they'd gobble once in a while, but on that day the Primos Freak slate and Crosscut HS striker was the only thing they'd gobble to on every hit. Wonder what the magic combo will be tomorrow?!?!?!

I like their mouth calls but I've never tried any of their friction calls. Was it a slate type or a box?

They had both. I liked the box call a little better, the slate came with two kinds of strikers, but the box had a better tone.
