Where I hunt in MD there is no fall season, but while climbing a tree this morning I spooked a whole flock out of the tree next to me. I nearly fell out of the tree it scared me so bad. Then a hour or two later watched two nice toms on top of a ridge, clucking up a storm, looking for the flock. They had some loooong beards. Just makes me think about how much I love being in the woods and as sad as it is when when deer season ends, Turkey season is just around the corner. ;D

I'd never chased them in the fall until last year. Dang Merriams in North Dakota drove me nuts for the first few years out there, and until last year there were no Non-resident tags for turkeys in that state. But last year they did start allowing NR's to get fall tags, for gobbler or hen, and I got TWO!! Was neat to take a break from deer and chase them, you can see the flocks forever out there. And I mean flocks up to 50 birds. Took this one the second week I was there, nice and warm at 45 degrees. Took the second gobbler the last week I was there, was -12 for a low and around -4 when I shot him. Just got the mount back, got a full strut mount in the snow of him. This year I've got one tag for when I head out. Next time I stay in state I'm going to have to hit Garrett in the fall and give it a try here. And yes, that's a bow. Both bow kills out there. ;D

What a long beard! Are they alot like the eastern turkey? Or more importantly do they taste as good as the eastern turkey? Man you have some great pictures of your trophies. I started an album few years ago and now and again like to take it out and remember the hunt. Hopefully one day I can hunt as wide of a variety of game as you. Oh and by the way turkey with a bow is probably some of the hardest hunting I can think of. BUCKWILD!

I didn't notice much difference in taste, they were still very good. Coloration and habits are the big differences, much more vocal birds. Beleive me, I'd have used the shotgun out there if I could, I like the big BOOM on 'em, but Billy is serious when he says the ranch is bow only! Not as hard as you'd think, though. It's so open you can see them from a long ways, and after a few days of looking you learn their travel patterns to and from the roost (not many big trees). Pop up a blind and wait on them, all there is to it.
Next spring I want to take one here with the bow, that'll be a challenge. Just gotten serious on turkeys the past few springs and I've gotten addicted to it.
Just keep hunting and one day you'll look back and be amazed what you've done and hunted and killed. I'm in wonder myself sometimes. And keeping records is a good idea, I've kept logbooks with info and pics from every hunt I've been on since high school, on the 6th big journal now.
