This is for those of us who havn't connected on a big buck yet this year. I get a little frustrated around this time because I know after shotgun season its going to be even tougher than its already been. I have put a lot of time in so far, only to have a couple big buck sightings. This has been one of my slowest seasons ever. I actually for the first time this entire season had to drag myself out of bed this morning to hunt, like going to work or something. I sat in the tree not even expecting to see anything. I hate feeling like this. I think I'm going to take this week off and gear myself up for firearms opener. Anyone else as frustrated as me???

Hardcore I share you pain too. I hunted more this year, here on the farm than I have in years. I normally break it up by going to our place in W.V. but, this year, I have had one thing after another pop up and not allow me the time to get up there. This year I'm even missing the start of gun season up there!!! So I have been hunting at home pretty hard this year and haven't seen a real nice buck to speak of. I've had my normal changes on the small bucks and some does, but nothing to get me pumped up over.

This is the farthest up in the year that we (wife and I ) have gone w/out a deer in a LONG time! That said, I remember when I started in the 70s, that I was happy if I even SAW a deer! Lot more hunters back then and a lot smaller herd added up to LOW success rates. Then late 80s and through 90s we got spoiled. Heck, got to the point where I'd get antsy if I hadn't seen anything in an hour. I'm definitely seeing less deer the last 4 or 5 years than a decade ago. Honestly, I'm happy to be out there. An even if I sometimes get a little frustrated, I can't not be there. Just something I have to do. And it only takes a second for the buck of a lifetime to walk into range. You better be there, and be ready when he does!

Your monster deer is out there in the woods, its the hunter who never gives up and and the hunter that respects nature that'll get that monster. This is what one of my favorite hunting partners sent to me after I was voicing my disapointment. Merideth Conover took a nice 8 point, 132lb. buck near my hunting area while I was working overtime. I am so proud of this young hunter. She has harvested a couple of nice bucks now and has great attitude about the sport. Keeps me going!!!

Even though I took a buck in NY and one in MD, I haven’t really seen many deer. I question the high bag limits here. As Davep said, for me in NY, the late 90's and early 00's were good. You could kill two bucks and up to seven doe a season. So that's what we did and now, the numbers are noticeably down. You have to beg for ONE doe tag now. How long has MD allowed you to take virtually an unlimited number of deer? Not to mention with three different weapons?

When you least expect it the monster of your dreams will be standing there for the perfect shot, don't give up. I never drew blood last year but still was out there every chance I got. Make the small ones trophy's too. Your day is right around the corner.
