What I saw this morning has me mad as HELL. On my way to work on Rt 97 in Glennwood a car in front of me hit a small buck (only had about 2" horns) they didn't stop. The deer was on the white line and still very much alive. I did a U turn and went back. He didn't look too bad. He had a busted back leg and I am sure he will be blind in one eye. I have seen deer that were hit worse and still lived (they are a pretty tough critter). After watching him on the white line for about 5 minutes it was clear he needed to get off the road if he was to have any chance at making it. I just grabed it by the ears and it got up and I was able to lead it about 10 yards into the woods an let it go. He went about another 10 yards on his own and just stood there. I am going to stop back tonight and see if he made it. I guess I could have just put him down and that would have been the end of it but, I really think what I did was the best thing. Sounds strange but it is in the same place that I hunt, who knows in a few years he might be a nice buck. I guess the problem I have with the whole thing is that even if the person didn't care about the deer, they also didn't care about the other vehicles that were on the road and might have hit the deer and caused a big accident.

People do some strange things when they're in a hurry. It seems that you did the right thing. At least you did something.

I hear ya, i am big into stopping and getting them off the road, or when i see them close to the road, i stop and whistle at them or honk the horn to scare them off. People are so ignorant. I make it a point to stop and get stuff out of the road i think may be hazardous to someone else. including wounded animals. I am sad to say i have had to put down a few nice bucks and does that were hit by cars and left for dead. done the same thing that you did today as well. as you said they are tough as hell and sometimes if the accident isn't really bad it just knocks the sense out of them and they are just laying there kind of "knocked out" but awake. I had to stop for a nice 8 point one night that was hit but was very uch alert on the side of the road and i try to get my head lights in there eyes to blind them a bit. I grabbed his horns to be sure he would not gore me and he stood up, talk about your butt puckering. he stood there for a minute and i kind of talked to him and lead him off the road let go and he walked a few steps and turned back to look at me. that is when i thought well if thing thing is going to attack me he is goign to do it now, so i pulled out my knife just in case. he stood there for a minute as to say thanks and kind of just eased off. it was kind of cool to see and i really hope he made it and did not have any bad internal injuries that i could not see. but i wanted to make sure that he was not there to jump in front of a car load of kids or a family to really do some damage and maybe hurt or kill osmeone. it is kind of shameful people would hit an animal and not evenb have the decentcy to check if it is alive, dead, suffering or what have you, buit when i see it i take the time to do what i can to include ending the suffering of the animal. i think you did the right thing and you should be commended.. sorry for the ramble..

I was going to work one day and there was a deer on the yellow line with cars backed up on both sides. I drove around the cars on the shoulder which pissed everyone off in front of me for some reason. It was a small buck all messed up. It wasnt going to make it so I dragged it in the ditch and got a bat out of my truck and finished it off in front of an audience of people incluiding a school bus. I think everyone was disgusted with me, they were cutting me the eye and shaking there heads. I know it was a little brutal but the deer was suffering and I did what I thought was the right thing. It was either put him down or have a pile up of cars watch this deer suffer for god knows how long or possibly cause an accident.

Maybe the driver was afraid of deer. I mean its easy for hunters to say what should be done with an injured deer. But I then think of someone like my mom, who would be deathly afaid to go near any deer dead or alive. If she hit one I doubt she would stop at all, she probably would just cry all the way home. And the thought of her dragging a deer off the road is well, imagine your moms dragging a deer, hilarious thought.

I will give you all a" BIG THUMBS UP ". I never did more than to look and drive by a deer on the side of the road feeling down for the animal and the hunter that could have harvested it. I did stop yesterday on my way down the road and remembered this buck down on the side of the road, remembering you guys conversations, turned around and drug it into the woods out of site and off the edge of the road. Keep up the good work and happy hunting.

I wouldn't fault someone for driving off after hitting a deer. Honestly, my first concern would probably be getting somewhere safe to inspect my vehicle and hope there's no major damage that will prevent me from getting to my destination (think radiator). Today as I was headed back to VA from Columbia, someone had hit one on 301S past Bowie. It was laying in the road with its head down, curled up. Still alive. There was so much traffic, that I couldn't stop and drag it out of the road without putting myself in harm's way. Hopefully a cop was able to stop traffic to take her out of the road. But for the record, I have moved a few dead animals off the road. Kudos to those that do the same.
