If I do an out of state hunt it would be for mulies or elk or bear. I feel that maryland has deer that come close to the best. You have as good as a chance here for a monster whitetail as another state. It would be hard for me to justify spending the money on hunting an animal native to MD. Now granted an outfitter scouts, plants food plots, sets stands, knows what the deer are doing, and drastically increases your odds of killing a nice big buck. But ever time i see the crutchfield buck I smile and think of all the other hunters that want to come to MD!

Spring 2009, black bear hunt, Canada, $1500 a person including permits. Its on my calendar and I have already started saving the money. Maybe after that I can afford some mulie action.

I'm with hardcore on the whitetail thing - I can't see spending that to get what is here already...Bear are native here as well. I'm after something like mulies or elk if I'm going to pay. On the MD blackbear hunt (my buddy drew a permit, so I got to go along) we saw TONS of bear sign. Think I'll try to get one in state - 20 bucks. At least try to... ;D

Hog hunts are supposed to be fairly cheap with high success rates...

Hog hunts are fun but I grew up doing them all the time on public land in louisiana and mississippi.. we used to catch them a couple dogs then you'd have to tackle them to the ground and hog tie them.. that was so much fun i miss it..

Yes I felt funny driving to Iowa with a picture of the Crutchfield buck in my truck. But I look at it as a vacation as much as a hunting trip. It`s alot different hunting in other areas of the country. You tend to meet alot of nice people too.

I'm probably going to try mulies next. Three ideas: 1)either apply in Wyoming, in one of the areas with lots of public land/HMA s,wait the 2-3 years till I draw, and do it myself. 2) try NW Colorado where I've bombed out on the elk drawing the last 11 years to learn the area for when I eventually do pull a tag. 3)FLOAT NE Montana, Missouri River/reservoirs/Charlie Russell area. The idea of canoeing/camping/hunting just sticks in my head.Probably a logistical nightmare to put together, but I keep coming back to it.
My plan was to just buy an over the counter Nebraska muzzleloader tag and go after a mulie in the SW part of the state, on public land, until I saw the tag went form $175 t0 $350, then up again this year (over $400!). Western states are raping the non residents. Hard for me to spend that kind of money to hunt ANY deer, esp when you can get a elk tag for not much more.
Colorado archery elk is a fairly cheap way to go,esp if you just want a cow. The two guys I was at Assateague with when we ran into Osprey in October went last fall and took a nice bull and a big cow, on a DIY hunt, but they are both kind of off the deep end when it comes to any and all hunting.
I'm more into the DIY hunts (And I'm CHEAP):I'd rather sink or swim on my own.Plenty of choices and opportunities out there if you look. SOmetimes it just nice to hunt new ground, even if for whitetails. Ohio has the Wayne Nat'l Forest and some HUGE whitetails.
Have also thought of a simple varmint hunt:coyotes,p-dogs,jacks,etc.Lots of states you don't even need a license.
One last idea. Many of the tribal agencies run their own hunts on their reservations:no drawings involved. Range from the skillion dollar elk hunts on the Apache res in N Mex, to simply low day fees for access to shoot prarie dogs. Also antelope, deer, etc Ft Belknap used to be pretty reasonable, but haven't looked into it for a few years.
Know some guys who rent a 15 passanger van,and bear hunt in Canada every other year. Haul their food, etc, and just pay for a cabin and baited stands.everything else they take care of themselves, and comesin under $1,000.

If anybody is interested in joining a hunt club in SE Ohio (Perry Co), send me a private message. It is 1377 acres with about 100 acres of lakes. The cost is $500 for the year. It includes camping, fishing and hunting. There will be a max of 15 members and most live out of state. Last year, only 6 hunters showed up for gun season. Nobody has been hunting waterfowl but there are geese and some ducks on the lakes. No fishing license is required on private land in Ohio. The lakes have plenty of largemouths and catfish. There are "fishing only" memberships too for about $50/year.

Almost sounds too good to be true.... being a native of ohio myself, I have hunted just about every acre of SE Ohio and have never heard of this place....can you provide anymore info than that...like a web addy

www.oaktreehuntingclub.com/The closest town is New Lexington. The fishing members pay for about half the cost of the land. The guy who runs the club is friends with the landowner's son. The land was open to the public a few years ago. The owner got disgusted with the way the land was being trashed and began leasing it. The hunting has been getting better since then. If you show up during the summer, the club president always has something good cooking on the grill at his place. What part of Ohio are you from?
