About 9:00 Saturday night 11-03-07 on the way to La Plata just past Zekiah Swamp I saw what I thought was a road killed deer. On the way home after picking up my son I mentioned that if the road kill was still there I was going to drag it into the woods. In my mind even a dead deer deserves a little dignity. It was still there ,we did a u-turn , my son remarked "it looked as though something ran over it`s head" When I grabbed it I couldn`t believe it , It was a nice buck.... had it`s rack cut out with a saw....and was dropped less than one foot from the white line on Route 6.....still warm and hadn`t been field dressed.....It was a bowkill. I find it hard to believe that anyone could do such a stunt. I have been hunting for close to 40 years and would have been proud to have taken such a wonderful animal with my bow.Everyone lost on this situation.

Maybe it was shot and just happened to drop right along Rt 6 and shooter couldn't or didn't find it? Someone else comes along, sees thedead deer, and saws off the rack. I can't see anyone going thru the trouble of shooting it, dragging and loading it, cutting off the rack, then dumping it alongside a major road.Or shooting it, tracking it,then just cutting off the rack along the raod, if that's where it dropped. Heck, my wife called me a while back and told me that there was a HUGE buck dead on 6, just past the CH library. She didn't have a saw,and to "get my @$$ over there!". I was tied up and when she came back, it was gone!

Yeah, They will cut a rack off a dead deer in a heart beat. I personally don't find anything gratifying about it. I didn't kill it so I have no story behind the rack other than I found it on a road kill. For me, I'd rather have a rack in my possession that I killed during a hunt. Just my 2 cents

There are a lot of things that I don't understand, this is one! If I saw a buck along the road my last thought is to cut its rack off! My first is I wish it was alive and lived where I hunt. Another thing I don't undersand is why a woman gets mad when a man hunts all day??

That is rather disturbing. Any bow kill in my mind is a trophy. But a trophy bow kill, you can't beat that! Hopefully it was shot and couldn't make it across the road or something. I'd hope that someone who puts the time and effort into hunting/harvesting a trophy wouldn't be so ignorant to cut a rack off and dump the rest.

Like davep said, why would someone drag it out to the road to simply cut off the rack. Sad story either way though.

seen a similar situation in Waldorf. a guy i know was going home when a huge buck ran across the road with an arrow sticking out of him. he piled up on the shoulder of the road and the dude I know cut the rack off of him and left the deer, then chose to brag to me he did it.. I was so pissed.. the deer would have been an easy track for the hunter who was hunting on private land and had just come across a small feild to get away and this dick cuts the horns off someones trophy.. I could have kicked his a$$ right there. but you cannot beat the stupid out of someone i guess... be fun to try sometimes though...

Here's my two cents. I believe it was shot by a hunter maybe hours or days before. Maybe got hit by a car, which I'm sure everyone sees five to ten new ones a day, then had a hunter take the rack. I have taken antlers over the years. Not in recent years but in years past. I took them for a few reasons. The first is why would you let a pair of antlers go to waste. If the meat can't be salvaged at least the antlers can be admired or used. I use them for rattling antlers, decoration, knife handles, arts and crafts etc. What I do have a problem with is when the skull plate is cut or the deer is beheaded and left in plain view for the public to see. You cut the antlers only and its a doe to non-hunters. You cut the skull plate and expose the brain or God forbid cut off the head. You and ALL other hunters become barbaric savages who only want to kill every deer for its antlers and nothing else. When I see that situation it makes me sick to my stomach. Gives hunters a bad name and makes kids cry and hate hunters. Drag the deer into the woods and do what you wish out of sight. Is taking just the antlers disrespectful to the animal? In some peoples eyes yes, in mine no. People don't hit deer on purpose to take their antlers, I think using the antlers is even honoring the dead animal a little (kind of a stretch I know) Anyways sorry to ramble I have seen several a few brains and headless deer latley and it pisses me off. I only get pissed about the antlers being cut because I wonder how big the buck was.

Most of my antler collection is from roadkill but I do agree pull it out of plain sight and just take the antlers.. people dont like seeing the bloody gory part so dont leave the brain hanging out or headless deer to be viewed by all.... I hunt, raise cows' and chickens for food but still dont care just to look at dead critters.. they should get the respect they deserve

Last year halloween night i almost hit a really nice 8 right outside of laplata, i mean inches from hitting him tires screeching eyes wide open--you know the usual, But anyways 2 days later on my way into Laplata i see a trash truck on the side of the road and two other cars on the opposite side of the road i slowed down and there he was. In the same spot where he ran in front of me, He had jumped about 2 feet before the driver hit him in the trash truck and the guy thought he was gonna come through the window, Very sad as i would have loved this deer to walk by my stand but anyways i would have taken the whole deer tagged it after contacting NRP and probably had him mounted it was a nice deer and belonged in someones trophy room even though he got ran over. The two other guys just stood and glared at me as i talked to the driver and they made it clear that they were taking it so whatever NOW thats rambling on but i agree with hardcore take it into the woods at least to knock off the antlers and if you want the whole head then take the whole deer dont leave em where non hunters can see them
