One down to get it started, first thing opening morning. Doe and two yearlings came in, dropped the big doe with the .270. She's a big old horse headed doe that's snorted and picked me off a few times during bow season, happy to knock her out. Also saw another doe and fawn plus a randy little spike. Three hours into it and already one woods beef on the hanging rack!!

I'm surprised at how little shooting I'm hearing this weekend. Took the doe to a butcher shop and the DNR guys were talking about how few deer were coming in. Wonder if it's the wind or EHD?

Only heard a handful of shots on Saturday..but I saw more deer in range than any other opening day...even in the wind. Went out this afternoon at 3;15 dropped a nice 8 pter at 118 yards 20 gauge Savage with Zeiss scope is awesome.

I heard shots going off around me in the morning and quite a few shots in the afternoon. I know 5 or 6 deer that dropped Saturday between friends and family. I didn't even see a deer until I was driving down the road around 6pm. Bummer. I think it was just too damn windy.
Too bad dove season was over... I saw at least 30 of them. Lol

So happy! My two year adventure with an amazing buck that i have over 1500 trail cam photos of is finally over and I can finally sleep again. First stumbled on this deer in January of 2010 when he was sporting a very respectable rack and his potential was obvious. Did not hunt him that year and waited until the following year to see if he was still around. Got pics of him early August 2011 and to my surprise his rack had exploded! Had one encounter all that year, had an opportunity and did not make the shot. Pulled out in fear of pushing him off the property and waited for the following year. August 2012 he was back! His antlers were very similar to the year before but he had added alot of trash to his nearly perfect rack but also added another year of education uder his belt. He was no where near as camera friendly and his day light visits were not as predictable as the year before but he still made his appearances. Hunted him as hard as I could (building a house so my time was cut in half) and limited my time in the area and was finally able to come face to face with him for only the second time ever Saturday evening. As you all know the wind was horrible Saturday afternoon....it was blowing my scent in every direction. At 3:55 I had 3 does come in at 100yards and between the gusting wind and my scent swirling they got out of town real quick. At about 4:15 I had a small basket rack 8 pt come in and he reacted the same way. Off he went! Damn! It was not looking good at all. At 4:55 a deer was coming in pretty steady, I noticed it had antlers but looked small. As it got closer I noticed a distinct kicker on the side of the deers left g2 and realized it was the deer I was after! Holy shi#$ here he comes! I was so high in the tree he honestly looked small! Best of all the wind was blowing in a favorable direction as to where he was approaching. That did not last long as the wind went across my left check and the deer instantly got nervous. I had a small window through some holly trees if he would turn broadside and he did. I took my opportunity and shot! He shot by me like he was shot out a connon and off he went hauling ass. I was trying to follow him through some lanes and he never came through an opening I thought he would have passed through but I never really heard a loud crash. I instantly thought the worse and almost puked! I am color blind and have trouble finding blood but did manage to find a few a drops of blood in an area i knew he had crossed through. Scared to push him but happy i had made contact I pulled out and called my brother who is awesome at following blood trails to help me in the recovery. 5 minutes after we trailed him there he was! Pretty good shot, a touch high but blew out the top of his lungs. I shoot a H&r 20 gauge with Remington accutip slugs and boy did it do the trick. He didnt go 80 yards! This year has been amazing! My 10 year old son took a big 8pt during youth day, my 12 year old daughter gets her first deer ever and I bag the biggest deer of entire hunting career and my wife and I built our dream house. I was able to share trail cam pics and stories of this deer with my father, brother, wife, children and some close friends over the last few years and they were all just as happy as I was that I finally got this great deer. I could'nt be any happier and very thankful for the opportunity! Going to try to get some better outdoor pics tomorrow before I cape him out. for some reason it keeps removing my pics

Dang Jbird, that one's a PIG! I spent my day today watching the orange backed marsh sasquatch in the phrag at Blackwater. I passed a spike in the morning and another spike and two hinds in the afternoon waiting on something big after sitting all day. Congrats to Fox with two hinds and my buddy Art with a big 6 pt stag.

JBird, that is a stud buck. Looks like he'll score near 170. Congrats to the blackwater bunch. I saw Fox eat a sika on the way out.
