Well it is almost here and I really cannot tell you how excited I am. I bought a youth day hunt for my son Dylan at the Ducks Unlimited Dinner this year. I spoke with the guide last week and he told me he would be doing some scouting this weekend and would let me know. Well I didn't hear from him all weekend and it kind of slipped my mind since I was in West Virginia white water rafting. so when I got home my boy asked me about the hunt and I told him it was next weekend. we are going to start dragging out camo this week. He was all pumped up and excited but I don't know which one of us is more excited. I get to work today and had a messege from the guide. I guess he called me Saturday from the last number I talked to him on. He said "well i am here on the property scouting around. I checked the blind you guys will be in and it is ready to go. I went to walk away and all I hear is turkeys gobbling in every direction... SHOULD BE A GREAT DAY next weekend." I am pretty pumped. We will be hunting the same blind I hunted with this guy when I got my first turkey a couple years ago and this would be a really cool memory if my boy gets one out of the same blind. I cannot wait.. Good luck to you guys this weekend if you get out with the kids....

Andy that is awesome and hope Dylan scores on a big mature tom brother. I'm taking a friends kid out youth day myself and we set up our blind this last weekend and I will be filming his hunt. We heard 3 toms gobbling early that morning and things are looking great for opening day. I hope other members of this site who have turkey properties take a kid hunting this weekend, we need to show our children that video games isn't the only kind of fun.

My buddy Logan is set for the day, and I've been seeing a few birds back in the field. Going to get out and start listening rest of the week in some different spots.
Don't forget two things. First, youth day is ALL DAY HUNTING this year, so you've got the afternoon, too. Second, don't forget public land, there's very little pressure on youth day and I've had some GREAT hunts on public on youth day with kids before everyone gets after the birds.

Yeah the weather does look like it is going to be horrible. FIGURES.. pay to take him out and it will get rained out. Well hopefully this is one of those times that the weather people are wrong or at least it hold off for a few hours in the am for the turkeys to get down and moving. Good luck out there and pack a rain suit.

Last I heard down here was rain in the afternoon, but windy in the AM. Figures, they always seem to get lousy weather for youth day. Shame it wasn't today, I was out scouting and heard birds gobbling everywhere! Seemed like each place I went I heard six or more birds sounding off, got me a bit pumped up!

that is sweet. I hope there is a break in thw weather at some point in the morning. I really want to see my son's face if we can get a strutter into range. I was told by the guide we are hunting the same place I hunted a few years ago and it is a small food plot they just planted and lots of activity by the birds there. Hopefully if the weather stay crappy they still come to the food plot to strut and feed and into range. But i would prefer the weather break and give us a chance.

Yeah same thing. They were gobbling good this morning! I'm glad to see rain will hold off till afternoon. Fox, a sheltered food plot sounds promising in the wind. Good luck!

We got to my second property today around 845 cause we heard nothing at the first. Was just starting to give up hope when I got one to sound off. I got the boy and his father set up and I told him to.get the gun up and not move if I could get him to gobble. I sat down 30 yds behind them and called. Ten seconds later I heard two sound off. They were coming. They gobbled twice to try to find me and so I called to them. They gobbled and got closer so i was getting excited. All I could see though was the boy moving.... then I saw them. Only problem was the boy was not sitting still! those birds picked them out and took off. Worst part, they never saw the turkeys!! One had a really long beard!! They looked very big frm where I was sitting!! Lesson learned! I just love that I was able to call up two birds!

I didn't even get to go today, the boy I usually take called me Friday and said he was grounded becuase of bad grades at school. How come it feels more like I got punished than he did?!

Congrats to all who scored, or nearly did! Called in some jakes at about 930 but the boy I took wanted a longbeard cause he shot a jake last year. Had one bird answer at 1030 but it was so windy I could not tell which direction. Never heard another peep. Had a hen at 20 yds at 1130 that might have had a beard but I could not be certain. I think the boy was wishing he had those jakes back in front of him at 1230:)
