Wed. morning I was able to harvest a nice 8 pt. He was a big mature deer. When I was inspecting the antlers and I noticed a small hole in the back of the antler near the ear. You could see up the antler and down from the inside, it was hollow. Not a very big area but it was clear that it had some hollow portion to it. I have never seen this before and am curious if anyone out there has and has an explaination they can share.

It was clearly not a bullet hole.

Afew years ago I shot a big 6 point that had a hole in the antler but it didn't go allthe way through. it was like something bored into along the beam line. My hunting buddy said that when it was in velvet an insect like a fly of some sort borrowed into it. I don't know if that is correct but it seemed believable and does seem to make sence.

I'd like to see some pics. My father in law has a mount of a buck with antlers that look like they were decaying tree stumps. I'll post some pics soon.

this hole did not go all the way through but it does sound like we are talking about the same thing. I did have a buddy tell me it was some sort of fly that did this...I will try to get some pics, but he is already at the taxidermist! I have some pics will post them when I have a chance. I would love more details about htis "fly".

The hole in the antler looks and sounds like what is called a foramen. This is caused when the velvet is damaged and or a blood vessel works it's way to the surface while the antler is growing. Seems to occur a lot around this area have a number of antlers with it.

That is one of my father in laws mounts. Pretty wierd rack, a real conversation piece. Holes and nubs and total weirdness. Cool deer though.

The first mulie I shot had a hole about the diameter of a pencil in the beam, I've always heard about the flies too and assumed it was that. Whatever causes it, it certainly isn't just a local thing!
