Anyone ever tanned there own deer hide? Rather than just throw the hide away, I would like to be able to tan the things myself. Looking for any pointers some of you may have.

Depends on if you want to just hang on the wall and display, or you want to use the leather for something. If you just want to hang it on a wall, you get all the meat and fat off that you can, stretch and pin skin side up rub it down with a mixture of sea salt and borax, let dry for couple of weeks, rubbing with more salt and borax every week. It will be hard as a board, but will hold all the hair. If you want to use the leather, if you want it soft it is a ton of work, cheaper and less effort to send it out and have it done professionaly. I did it one time when I was younger, and it wore me out.

Sent one out this year to usa foxx. www.usafoxx.com $39 for the tan. $20 for the fleshing and salting. Plus shipping. Three month turnaround. Or do it like the indians and use deer brain to rub on the hide and stretch it.

For a hanging wall-mounted hide, a mixture of salt or brine and borax is required. Once you scrape the hide rub the solution on to it and let dry while stretching the hide. Repeat the process several times until you feel it has had enough. As for the soft hides, like captwahoo said it's too long of a process and too much work/money involved. It's much easier to send it off to be tanned professionally.

I looked on the internet yesterday & best I could find was $140. I know it's a bunch of work, but think I may try & do it myself. I couldn't afford $140 for every deer I shoot. My plan is to keep all of them & make clothing or a blanket. Maybe for a cool Halloween Costume.
