Normally I will get between 25 and 30 when bowhunting and between 35 and 40 when using a gun. It also depends on the makeup of the land I am hunting. If there is alot of undergrowth, sometimes I will not get as high because your vision begins to become obstructed.

Not only the underbrush, but the tree itself is a big determining factor for when talking about how high to climb. If you're looking for a good climber stand, try and invest some time researching tree lounge and summit stands.

My bow hoist is 20'. When I use my climber that is as far as I go. I have rarely been picked out at that height. Most portable ladder stands are between 15'-20'.

I climb to about 25 feet. My rope is 27 feet. I am not afraid of heights either so the higher the better.

Api grand slam since 1999 and love it. Could use new chains and a paint job. I use to go 30 feet or so but now twenty to twenty five. The extra five feet always leaves my stand at too much of a downward angle.

good info ... those API stands look nice! .... I've hunted a perm. stand for the most part ... used a heavy ladder stand in the past, would not mind a good light climber, the api looks sweet.

Like I said in my previous post. Lone Wolf is the only way to go. It is super light, super easy to carry, not bulky, sets up very easy, dead quiet, super strong, easy to climb and the list goes on and on. It is a superior climbing stand thats heads and tails above the rest (pun intended) ;o)

After 25-30 years of near death experiences (not to mention scraping my damn nipples OFF a few times, in uncontrolled descents),I stopped using homemade,Baker style climbers.
Broke down and bought a Lone Wolf.Picked it up on eBay,NIB,for a hair over $200. BEST move I've ever made.Packs tight, carrys light, and doesn't stick up above my head,or out too far when carrying it.SO,doesn't hang up when going thru the thick stuff.Quiet tocarry, set up,and use as well
Now,I still use a lot of permanents,as well as Loc-ons,wher I stash the climbing sticks nearby.BEST way to ease into an area quietly and quickly. But for mobility, new areas, etc,I love the Lone Wolf.I borrowed/tried lots of others before breaking down and buying something.Lone Wolf was the one for me.Also, liked the Buckshot Hotshot.Nice, rigid platform.
And I really don't miss the Wile E. Coyote moments, when I was 20 feet up a tree, and watching my stand plummet,as my death grip/bear hug slowly weakened......

that is funny, but it happens every year. someone falls out of a stand to major injury or death. you are extremely lucky to be able to joke about it now...

I use a 180 from summit. It is light and works really well for me. I can climb to 20 feet in no time at all... safely! I was in a tree and watched my buddy lose his lower half and just hang there! He was yelling help and all I could do was laugh! He was only 7-8 feet up and had a harness on. I have heard stories that ended not so good so everyone be careful!!
