Hey guys, I have hunted waterfowl for a while now and was recently watching some hunting shows the other day and noticed that they were hunting during the evening for ducks. Has anyone tried hunting ducks around here in the evening. Is it worth going back out after a morning hunt to try and bag a couple ducks before sunset? Also is it legal to hunt waterfowl in the evening around here on the Patuxent river?

I have tried it a few times. Some times it's really slow and some times it's good. One year we couldn't get any shots at Cans in the morning and I started noticing that there were a lot of Cans around in the afternoon so we went one afternoon and had our limit by 3pm. Of course there was only 3 of us so it was 3 birds. We could have shot more had some decoy around 4 and they swam in the decoys for about 30 min. The following weeks the river was iced over so we didn't get to go again.
I think the big key is to find an area where they are sitting in the afternoon. If you go to your spot after work and there are no ducks there than it's probably not worth it. But as the old saying goes you can't kill them from your living room.
I try to go to Taylors Island once or twice a year for Mallards, we have gone in the afternoon a couple times and never really had any luck. Those guys on TV are going where they are seeing the birds sit in the afternoon.
Its legal to hunt ducks or geese in the afternoon everywhere to my knowledge. Probably some time limits on certain state lands.
