Are you boiling them or do you have a bug tank?

I don't do enough to keep a colony of beetles. I used to boil in sal soda, etc, but sometimes weakens them, and it's a nasty, smelly mess.
These days I do it the lazy way- rot it down in a bucket of water (I think it's called maceration)
Works pretty fast in warm/hot weather.Put a tight lid on it, away from the house, and out of the sun.
Direct sun is fine, and probably works faster, but you'll get algae in the bucket and on the skull that needs to be scrubbed off.
Change the water, all but a couple quarts, every 4 days or so if it's warm, every couple weeks if cool. BE CAREFUL not to lose teeth when dumping water.
You'll need to glue them back in, and sometimes ,(well most times), jaw halves separate, and need to be glued back together.
You can see where I did not degrease the beaver that well, and it looks a little yellow in spots.
I had HOPED to do my gator skull this way, til I found out you CAN'T skin the head out: no meat in between it and the skull.
So it was full hide OR skull. Still have to go IN thru the mouth and remove the palate, brain, meat, nerves, tongue, etc
Making a wall rug.
Should be FUN!

Here is my bear skull... Is a little darker than my deer heads but turned out good.. Fox Put it in a bucket of warm water with about 1/2 cup of Dawn Dish detergent! Leave it for 1-2 weeks and you should see a difference. You'll actually be able to see the grease on top of the water. It will get rid of those dark spots
