Nice pics Morgan! You're hell with the doubles! I always get "mixed" doubles, usually with a stinker or grinner. I still haven't caught a red yet this year, but I'm not trapping hard. Not many around most of my places, but just got permission for 300+ acres with a good many on it, but can't go in until late season. Picked up two grays this morning, here at home on the "kids' line"! Heck, my daughter got up at 0330 to go the other day.She was waiting on me when I came down at 0445! I think she's got the bug!
Question: Have a location where I've been seeing coons with a green puss around their eyes, looking rough.I haven't set a trap there yet, but seen a few out and about while hunting/scouting. Then the landowner told me he found a few dead ones, one on his PORCH! Distemper? They get both feline and canine, don't they? And is there any way of telling the difference?

Dave...Distemper coons for sure. No I don't know how to tell the difference. The best thing you can do is trap the hell out of them to keep it from spreading. I am not sure but I believe canine distemper is the one. Takes some time to kill them. Parvo usually kills them so fast, like 48 hrs, that they are in good shape externally when found dead. Necropsy will show the internal organs, especially the digestive system to be mush. Outbreaks can kill almost every coon in the area and foxes as well. Grays will really take it on the chin from parvo. They just disappear from the habitat. Once you learn to identify locations doubles are the way you efficiently use limited # traps to make large catches. Pete Leggett had 13 doubles in a row one morning. Major Boddicker did a study back in the '70's that proved it statistically. Location is the magic bullet in trapping, especially canids. Lure/set/trap choice way down the list. Good for your young'un. I can remember wanting to run to every trap I set to see what I had. Keep up the good work.
