Yes...even on private property. Don't need a license but you need a furbearer permit. If no trappers ed. classes are scheduled near you then you can get the workbook from the DNR and take the regularly scheduled test. I think you can even download the workbook from the DNR website.

Landowner or agent can trap or hunt a furbearer without a permit IF it is damaging personal or real property.
Garrett course is worth the trip.I really can't say enough good about it. And the food ALONE is worth the drive and the cost. Just BS with folks outside of formal instruction was very informative, and the instructers are all top notch. They'll tailor instruction to YOUR interests as well.
As far as other courses, well that's a sore spot. State mandated something without establishing a mechanism to help achieve it. The one other course I know of was up in Abingdon,MD (?) and I THINK the last testing session is tomorrow (you can get the workbook and guide FREE from the state, study it, complete theworkbook, THEN take the test at a few locations around the state).
A few of us on this side have been kicking around the idea of doing some sort of youth trapping day next fall. I have also had a few adults ask me as well. HOPEFULLY, something can get put together.
*** I think something like 10,000 folks bought the furbearer license the first year it was offered KNOWING if you waited until the next year, you'd have to take a class that wasn't offered!

Yea I was one of them people davep who got the license the first year.Have been getting them ever since. My question is when I go buy my licence every year they ask me if I want the trapping licence.Does this infor stay under my name or do they ask everybody this?My other question would be if they could add this on to the hunter safety course somehow.

I'm not sure how it's tracked. Current guidebook states that if you held the furbearer permit prior to August 1,2007 ('06-'07 season) you don't need the certificate. I assume this means you don't have to buy it any particular year IF you aren't going to trap, but are still good to go when you resume.
Anone else intersted,I'd call the DNR and request the manual and workbook.
The trappers ed manual is WAY thicker than the hunter safety book. It's a lot of material to cover.
Call DNR and tell them to send you teh material.

buckslayer...doesn't make any difference. If you can prove it go for it. The Trapper's Ed stuff is not difficult regardless once you have the permit you are good to go.
Dave....you need any help with your youth education day let me know in plenty of time...if those guys over there are unable to help I can damn sure do it and bring a couple more.
