ok, i know we have plenty of furbearers and fox hunters on here so someone has to have an answer. seems like every year more and more foxes are showing up around my house. its almost to the point where we have to keep the cats inside due to the fact they've already killed two. i know of about five dens that foxes use. is there anyway to drive them out so i can shoot them? maybe some K-1 and some matches? any suggestions guys?

you can always place some foot/box traps around their den sites and save your ammo on taking care of them,, just an idea..

I use to use tuna fish for the box traps i set when i was a kid and it worked.. I caught some foxes but mostly opossums and coons.... If they are real nice Reds or a big gray.... i would want one for the pelt.. keep that in mind and let me know what you catch I would be willing to come get it and take care of it so there are no holes in the pelt ......

You need to send a pm to davep or morgan they are the trapping experts on this site. Also start a thread on the site forum where it says other game ,i,m sure there you will get your answer. Good luck!

You might get a Gray to go into a box but if they are Reds save yourself the trouble and either call a trapper or learn to trap em yourself. As a general rule they don't use the dens this time of year anyway. When fox trapping I don't even bother to look for them. When the landowners say the den is over there....I say "Thanks" and set where I know I can catch them with a foothold. Are you serious about flammable liquids and matches down a hole ?

Are you serious about flammable liquids and matches down a hole ? lol, yes only because me and a few buddies did this before with groundhogs on my aunt's farm and it worked pretty well. i wasn't sure about fox dens because theres only one way in and out(i think). i set my two box traps around the dens but if u say they don't use them i doubt i'll have any luck tommorow morning. i'll see how things go and if i don't get anything i'm sure someone would be happy to come over and set all the traps they want.

Fox dens always have at least 2 entrances and sometimes 3 or 4.
Any good fox trapper can take care of your problem with 2 traps and a few weeks. With the right weather maybe sooner. Good luck with the boxes. You know...skunks are famous for using holes this time of year... When looking for trap locations you look for travel routes and these will be dictated by geographical and topographical conditions....swales, rivers, roads, power lines etc.

well i went out at six to check the box traps and had no luck but one oppossum. this thing looked calm as can be until i put my hand down to release it then it took a lunge at me. ugly little critters. Morgan i can see you are the expert on here when it comes to trapping judging from your past pictures. Thanks for the info on skunks, it would have sucked to drive out ol stinky. my grandfather still has all his old trapping gear i could use whenever i wanted but i'm not gonna bother because i have no clue what i'm doing. i would like to take a class and give it a try but don't have any info on when and where i can take it? anyone know? i didnt even bother resetting the box traps just brought them back with me.

buckslayer, how about we hunt them? its crazy fun... and not complicated at all. with these cold nights, i garentee we could call 1 out in less than 20 minutes. they really need to eat right now, and respond well. im always looking for places to hunt the nuissance ones. ive taken care of the problem with people that had there pet geese, cats, etc attacked by them. just say the word, or if you want to trap, morgan and davep will straighten you out. tons of foxes in st marys it seems.

Morgan actually teaches an in depth trapping school. 2 or 3 days long I believe. Teaches all about trapping. I self tought myself a few years ago and can set basic dirt hole sets for foxes and coons etc. Also beaver and muskrat a lot of fun. I have a book somewhere that was real helpful for me, if your interested in borrowing it I will look for it.

Well....I am just one of several very good trappers who volunteer to teach at our little school. We have a premier program here in Md., one of the best in the country but it is only once per year and in early Sept. And we can only take about 30-35 students per year. More info on our website: www.marylandtrappers.com/ , under "Advanced Trapper Education Course" You can hunt them...Grays will come to the call real well, Reds not so well but it can be done. Traps are far, far more efficient. Location is far and away the key to catching foxes....lures are not nearly so important as people think..no such thing as magic in a bottle...most any good lure in the right spot will work in a dirthole for nearly every furbearer we have.

thanks for all the info guys. now as for hunting them, me and my cousin have been a few times and we use a foxpro caller. your right it's a blast but i think hunting them doesnt do much justice. there's just wayyy to many. like morgan said trapping is the only way i think to solve the problem. i know a guy i used to go to school with who is an avid trapper. i gave him a call and he's gonna come down and give me a few lessons. another question. is it to late to get my furbearer permit or do i have to take the class before i get it because i'm pretty sure they started a new thing to where you have to take a class.
